Hi Gang.....

Just took delivery of latest eBay purchase: SX-100. Started taking it apart
to clean it. I found this stamped on back of the 50Kc amplifer subassembly:
199846 Mark2A.

Also, I found the radio to be completely unmodified. It has all of the
original
tubes with yellow Hallicrafter logo's on them. The latest date code that
I could find on a tube was "59". The radio is cleaning up well....just very
dusty.
I asked the seller (a non-radio type person) where she got. It came from an
estate sale with no other radio junque. Very interesting how eBay dealers are
beating the bushes.

Now the questions:

How many "variations" of the SX-100 were made? Where does my SX-100
Mark2A fit in on the timeline?

Is "199846" the radio's serial number.

What circuit/performance differences are there in the variations?

Any other comments appreciated.....thanks Hallicrafter enthusiasts!

Quoting from my Mk2 book, in the addendum of changes:
"......disregard references to the 11 meter band......"
Change second IF from 50.5 to 50.75 KC
Knob p/n's changed

Looking at the schematic, I can't see anything at first glance. I have both
receivers and they're about the same. Maybe someone else has more info for you.

Hey Pat, according to Chuck Dachis, the ultimate authority on all things
Hallicrafters, there were 4 versions of the SX-100, these include the
following: the SX-100, SX-100 Mk1, SX-100 Mk 1A, and the SX-100 Mk2. His
book lists no "2A" version of this fine receiver, but this is not to say
that it does not exist, and that it is not fairly common. Hallicrafters was
the worlds worst when it came to giving a radio a new designation, simply
because they made a minor cosmetic change, or, changed the value of an
insignificant part. This is the case with the SX-100. The only difference
between the "father" and its "children" are minor cosmetic differences,(i.e.
slightly different knobs on the later models), and very minor value changes
on electrical parts. The receivers were made from 1956 to 1961, and sold for
the, then, princely sum of $295.00. I hope that this has helped to shed a
little light on the subject for you, and good luck with the restoration!
Thanks,

I was lucky enough to find a very clean and aligned SX-100 at an IL hamfest a
few years ago for only $125 (I actually asked the OM selling it what was wrong
with it at that price). Well, the BFO knob is stuck, but ISTR it was OK when I
bought it.

Mine has no mention of 11 meters, but the 10m bandspread is calibrated down
to just below 27 MC. The BC band has the two CD triangles, and the 160m band
is shown as three legal subbands, back when LORAN kept us off parts of it.

In some ways this is the "poor man's SX-88" -- gear driven tuning, good
selectivity controls, very sensitive. In fact, mine sounds like it is trying
too hard to be sensitive, which sounds silly but if you've heard radios like
tht you can maybe relate.

Also impressive is that the relatively small cabinet is filled to the brim with
parts, not just a flat chassis with a lot of air space behind the dials.

Now, if it only had 6 main bands instead of 4, and push-pull output ... Mike K.

May I please ask what you paid for it or what they sell for these
days in general?

I had an SX-100 when I was a teenager and have kicked myself
many times for selling it.
