Help with TR-751A backlit LCD

I have a Kenwood TR-751A and the light is out. The LCD and meter isn't lit
up anymore. I believe the last trip I took it was knocked out.

I took the front cover off and couldn't see a bulb anywhere. Does anyone
know where it's located and what I can use to replace it? You can e-mail me

It's either an electroluminescent panel or vacuum fluorescent panel that is
part of the LCD stack. You should be able to see it on the schematic and
see where the high voltage goes into the panel. Check to make sure it is
getting voltage before replacing it.

I did take mine apart a couple of years ago, to clean the LCD...........the
original owner somehow got moisture behind the LCD, giving a water stain
type of appearnce. I did notice that there were a couple of light bulbs
behind the panel, but it has been awhile. I've been meaning to replace them
with LEDs.

I just replaced the meter lamp in my TR751A, and got another 751A with dead
bulbs... so I'll be doing it again.
You can play games with LEDs and dropping resistors, or jam something from
Radio Shack in there...
Or order the correct bulbs from Kenwood. The correct bulbs have a thin green
cover over the bulb to provide the correct color.
Part number from Kenwood parts (east or west, find them on Kenwood's
website)
is 830-0845-05.
Order a few, and stash them away. They are used in a few other Kenwood rigs.
The front panel comes off easily. You need to remove the knobs, and if I
remember
correctly, there is a hex nut (metric) on the tuning knob.
After you take the top and bottom shells off the radio, and the knobs, there
are a few screws
on the left and right that allow you to tilt the front panel forwards to get
to the bulbs.

This would be a great opportunity to put some LED's in there and then you'd
practically never have to worry about them going out on you again. I
remember seeing a fantastic article in QST describing how to do this if you
need some guidance. I don't remember what month it was, but if you can't
find it let me know and I'll look around. Basically all there is to it, is
to take power supply voltage (12V) from the radio and put a current limiting
resistor in series with the LED (20mA). Pretty easy and a good upgrade if
ever there was one.

P.S. I have an old TR-751 for sale by the way if you need some parts. Its
not putting out any power but all the other functions work on it. Would let
it go for pretty cheap if I could find a good home for it.
