I just bought a Gonset GSB-100. I am aware that the transformer was a
bad design in this unit. The GSB-100 that I bought has a rewound
transformer by W4CLJ in 1976. I was wondering if anyone knows anything
about what he did with the transformer. It says that it was number #212
so I assume he was in the transformer business. I believe he is a
Silent Key and someone else has his call at this time.

Any insight into this issue will be helpful. I have not plugged the
unit in yet. I am trying to dig out as much info first that I can and
do any modifications that might be required to make sure that the
current transformer which at this time I am assuming is OK will not blow
when I power and load it up.

Thanks

In article <3E234CC4...@yahoo.com>,

Ron,
Jess Price, W4CLJ, rewound transformers for a long time. For years there was
an ad in Florida Skip magazine: "Transformers rewound. Jess Price, W4CLJ,"
followed by his phone number.

I never had him rewind a transformer (I was lucky that none of my boatanchors
needed it), but I knew a few people who used his services. I believe he
ordinarily rewound the transformers to their original specs.

It's interesting that you brought up the GSB-100, because just yesterday I
read an article in a 1963 issue of 73 by a guy whose GSB-100 tranny
died. He adapted a standard TV-replacement transformer, using a bridge
rectifier and the "economy" circuit instead of the multiple taps of the
Gonset circuit. I'd be happy to scan it if you would like to see it; he
discusses the Gonset design and the reasons he opted to do the mod.

I was fascinated to find this thread. I have an HT-37 with a transformer rewound by Jess Price in October 1977. His old call worked out be the vanity call sign of another gentleman in Florida, in use since 2006.
