I have a source for Strand Vice and telephone style guy rods with mushroom
caps.

Has anyone used or have heard any pros or cons regarding the use of Strand
Vices in
lieu of cable clamps to terminate the ends of the guy wires? It seem
strange I don't see
these products being used on towers--just utility poles. Any reason for
this? I am
considering using the Strand Vices on my new Rohn 25G foldover tower next
year.

Peter:

There is good reason that you don't see them used
on towers to a
extent. That being that they are good for one
wrap-up when you
undo them the "grit" that holds the galvanized
stranded guy wire for
utility pole use is gone; get another guy wrap.
Now they could be used
quite successfully on guys where you put strain
insulators, but down
at the bottom where you might be re-tensioning the
cable, go for
thimbles and cable clamps. Al Piper; Central
Valley Electric Co-op
Inc. Just a chicken bander, but with two towers on
his place.

Are we confusing two different items here?

These are not "wrapped" around the guywire end--I think I know what
you are talking about; and Texas Tower carries them.

.
The strand vices are comprised of a stainless steel U loop, machined
aluminum holder, and a bullet shaped device that the guy wire
is run through. The internal mechanism is like a Chinese finger lock;
but the cable can be released with a flat-blade screwdriver by relieving the
spring tension on the cable locking mechanism. They come in
two different styles, one for insulators and one for rod eyes. Virtually
every backguyed telephone pole I have seen uses the Strand Vice device
at the guy rod. Reuse is not an issue, since the guys will have turnbuckles
that can be
undone when needed. They do not appear to be suitable (due to the shape of
stainless steel U loops) for other than insulator or guy rod eye
terminations. I am not
sure they would mate properly with thimbles.

Roger,
I'm still using many strand vises that I installed on
1/4" EHS guy wire over 25 years ago. I've never
experienced a failure and they still appear to be
in excellent condition. I'd still be using all of them today;
however, I replaced most of my steel guys with 3/8"
fiberglas rod five years ago.

More recently I've been using Big Grips, which are more
readily available in the ham marketplace, and -- like
strand vises -- very easy to install.
