I recently erected a new R7 antenna, and the SWR curves are not at all like
the ones shown in the Cushcraft manual. Have you tuned one of these antennas
recently? If so could you call me or give me your number so that I can talk
to you about how I should approach this problem??

Steve,

I don't know if anybody replied to you on this one but I too,
as a 2 month owner of an R7, have had a heck of a time getting decent
SWR readings on 20, 30, and 40 meters. At this point with SWR's anywhere
from 2.5 to infinity, the R7 is practically useless on these
bands. For now, I've vowed to pull the vertical off the roof a second
time and RE-CHECK all the suggested lengths but even then, Im not hopeful.
If this doesn't work, are there other options that readers would
suggest to fix the R7 short of taking it to the recycling center?

For that matter, given the California Bay Area 66X100 foot postage stamp
size lot that I live on, what other viable options are there other than a
vertical for getting a good signal out on 40-10 meters?

Peter-

I had a hell of a time with my R7 on 20 meters until I noticed that the
arrow sticker on the trap was upside down- so, I'd put the trap in the
antenna with the arrow pointing up, and therefore the trap was upside down
and the measurements were off. Making sure the antenna looked like the
picture did the trick. I've got reasonably low SWR on 40 through 10.

The deal is... The traps on these (R5, R7, perhaps predecessors) appear to
be poorly adjusted (or simply set to some nominal value/length) at the
factory.
I had similar problems with an R5 which refused to resonate on 17M. All
of the noodling around I tried (length adjustment of the antenna itself,
placement, grounding, etc) short of trap adjustment didn't do a thing.
What I'd do: set the element lengths to nominal values given in the docs.
Double and triple check that nothing is amiss with your assembly work, put
it up in the clear and draw out all the curves. If any particular bands are
BadWrong (tm) then, and only then, peel off the heat-shrink on the tap for
that band and tweak away. AFTER all bands are set as closely as possible,
you may wish to play with lengths a bit more but if SWR is below 2:1, your
time will be better spent cruising the bands for an unannounced Spratly
Island DXpedition.
The Cushcraft folks seem to keep this a secret... they'd rather have goods
returned than reveal it... beeezaar.
BTW, you'll find that the heat-shrink is of the sticky-lining variety. You
would do well to replace it with same.

trap.

Well, since the Bible is the supposedly the word of the Supreme and

: guidelines could present that very easily.

So ACLU guidelines specifically deny Christianity from publicly funded
institutions but allow, say, Muslims to force their public schools to
hold Muslim services? This appears to be what you are saying; please
elucidate. As far as I've seen, no religion may be foisted upon students
in a public school. You're free to practice any religion you want - at
home, in church, or even school, if you keep it to yourself.

The ACLU doesn't prevent Christian kids from praying at lunchtime, does it?

Gee, well I for one am glad to know that this is where my tax dollars go: into
wasted fax paper, deliberately misused government services, financial
compensation to fraudulent brain disorders. I'd be horrified if some of the
money I pay actually found its way into the educational system or economic
projects rather than being petered out providing crack babies like Joe Baptista
with the time and resources to waste even more of the money. In fact, I wish
there were more people out there whose only source of self-calidation is
harrassing the low levels of government so that they can hike my taxes even
higher.

I wonder if you pushed the metal mast up too far into the R7? That, in
essence, would short the base of the antenna with the radiating portion and
would put everything at the same potential as the mast. It would also by-pass
the matching network in the process...Can't do it that way. That is the only
way, I know of, that a metal mast would have any affect on "detuning" the R7.

I can almost guarantee you that if I set up your R7 that problem would not
exist. Keyword is almost. :-D

The only way to detune these antennas would be to mount them too close to
something metalic or to try to guy them with metalic guys...of course you can
also adjust the lengths of the various sections of the antenna and be off also.

I run an R5 currently. It is resonant smack dab where it's supposed to be on
each band...used my MFJ-259 analyzer after the antenna was put together in its
entirety. I went by the instructions to put the R5 together. Used a
screwdriver, a crescent wrench, my wife's car (something to support the antenna
during setup), and a measuring tape. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it
required no further tweaking...I mean it was done, first time!

One thing I didn't like was the way the 10 meter coil was wound for
27.8-something. A call to Ken Albertson at Cushcraft gave me instruction on
how to tune the antenna up into 10 meters...not that it really mattered. I
didn't ask why that type of instruction wasn't placed in the
literature...hmmmm. I'm sure there are those with the R7 who would like their
favorite 40 meter frequency tuned as the center freq on their antenna.

Tomorrow I will call Ken and let him know about this thread and see what kind
of support he may have to offer. This is interesting though.

Cheers!

I had seen someone post a while back that he used a tuner to get his R7 to work
on 80 meters. For those who do not know....DO NOT USE the R7 on bands it is
not designed for.

REASONS:

80 meter operations will damage the matching network

6 meter operations will blow the 17 meter trap.

I do not represent any manufacturer or dealer here on the net.

My R7 traps were full of water. The caps and shrink on all leak. Open the up and dry. Replace and seal the shrink on and get black caps from DX Engineering. Use only black plastic outside.
