I've been thinking about getting one. How well does it perform on 6m?
What about intermod? My FT-50RD has some serious intermod. I was wondering
if the VX-5R does too?

Sorry about 6 meters .. nothing to report here. Even 2 meters is near dead. Just
a few QSO's during drive time. 440 is a grave yard too. (Cowlumbus, Ohio)

Since I'm left handed, I *really* like mine. :-)
Getting back on the topic of antennas, I put an ANLI superflex
dual band antenna on it. That really makes it better (unless you
want to run 6m). The very thin and flexible whip carries nicely
with the radio in a Startac cellphone ballistic nylon belt case,
and seems to put out a bit more signal than the stock antenna
too.
It helps to put a "real" antenna on it for SWLing and listening to the
AM broadcast band. The radio expects a near 50 ohm antenna, and
the little VHF/UHF whips just don't hack it for HF and MW listening,
ie they are very high impedance voltage probes at those frequencies.
I've tried a number of things. For casual HF listening, a 10 or 20 foot
length of wire works pretty well. For AM broadcast, you really want
something different. I tried the ferrite loopstick out of an old pocket
portable for that. It actually works well, but you have to tune it with a
broadcast variable (also robbed from the pocket AM radio). It's ugly,
but it works, though you might as well just use the stock AM pocket
portable instead.
Back to the radio for a moment, battery life is really spectacular. The
Li-ion batteries really pack a wallop. It is the only HT I have that I can
carry and use at 5 watts all day at Dayton without carrying a spare battery.
It stands up pretty well to that intense RF environment too. Desense
and IMD is minimal for a HT with such wide receive coverage. (My
VX-1R's battery will also last all day, but it doesn't have enough
power to punch through from one end of the fleamarket to someone
inside the arena at times. The VX-5R does have enough punch.)

I've found the same to be true. I bought mine for travel.

Hi Brent,
You wanna buy mine?? Just kidding... ?
I've had the VX5R for a few months now. Works good on 2m and 440.
For 6m, need a better antenna IMHO. Hosing the little guy up to a 6m
J-pole, I can hit any repeater within eye-shot. Audio is a little weak
on 6m for some reason. I've adjusted the deviation, but still not up
to standards(Seems others have had the same problem). Someone mentioned
that an external speaker/mic improves audio thou. Regarding intermod,
havent had any serious problems considering I live by downtown
San Jose, CA... Took it up the hill to repeater/cellphone/pager
jungle and it had alot of problems on 2m&440. 6m was ok though for
some reason.... Just like the other person, havent had to many contacts
even though there are plenty of repeaters and hams in the S.F. Bay area.
I'll keep trying thou :-) . Handbrake(xyl) is threatening to make me
give up the toy if I dont use it more except to impress the friends and
family(What'z you got 'dar man... $350 FM R-a-d-i-ooo!)
