What methods seem to work to keep animals off of towers?

Hi Robert, a 150 lb. male Alaskan Husky worked pretty well for me.
Just wished he would have ignored the skunks.

Some of my friends use artificial owls, life size, to keep birds and other
potential owl meals away. Seems to work.....

Don't provide beer at antenna parties.
No charge for the advice.

Neon sign transformer? 15000 volts. Maybe put a fence around
the base of the tower. Fried squirrel anyone? Raccoon? Dog?

Robert,
I remember reading about some folks who were having problems with
critters damaging their vegatable garden. Their solution was to get some
mountain lion excrement from the local zoo and spread it around the
perphery of the garden. They had no more problems.
Another idea is to put an inverted cone barrier on the tower that you
can remove when you need to climb it.
Dave
Most animals won't try to climb a tower. Birds like to perch on the
antenna, and squirrels may find your coax appetizing, but that's about
it. Fake owls seem to deal with both. But there is one other animal you
need to keep off the tower, however, and that is the neighborhood
rug rats. The best defense against them is shields placed over the tower
faces for the first 10 feet. This gives them no purchase on the tower,
so they won't climb it. Either sheetmetal or plank shields can be used.

High voltage works too, especially for the neighbor's kids.
Seriously, about the only thing that will keep squirrels off is to bolt
smooth sheet metal to the bottom 6 feet. And polishing would help.
I've seen squirrels climb surfaces you'd swear they needed suctin cups!

What do you recommend to ward off other owls? ;-)
Doug, N6XQY
Get a piece of cheap plywood, luon, etc. Cut three pieces the full 8 ft
and just wide enough to fit between the tower legs, flat againest the
crossbraces. Make, or buy, a couples of 'L' shaped bolts. drill holes
for bolts through wood even with a couple of crossbraces. Put bolts the
hole and let it through hole and let it hang on the corssbrace. Tighten
the nuts on the bolts to make make it secure. This shields the lower 8
foot form being able to climb. Not only keeps critters off. But, kids
too. Remember, in many states a tower is considered an attractive
nuicence by law and YOU can be held liable if another's kid tries to
climb it and is injured and you had had taken no measures (fence,
shields, etc) to prevent it. Just like a swimming pool.
Happened to a friend of mine.

Just kidding :) Maybe a fence around the area at the bottom of
the tower.
