A company called Associated has advertised in the Ham Trader (1st Sept
issue 1997, page 36, top, center) that they are selling a screwdriver
antenna with 8 to 11 db gain over commercial antennas. Think about
that....8 - 11 db gain over my hustler antenna...WOW too good to be true.
I've got beams that don't do that well. Their number is 1-800-359-0050.
They state that they have sold to the military. I wonder if they also sell
hammers and toilet seats? If you can believe that their antenna can give 8
to 11 db gain over another commercial antenna then ask them about some land
in Florida while you are ordering one.
As someone famous once said " There is a sucker born every minute ".

You might want to take a look at the recent shootout results. I think
you will find 8-11 db gain over Hustlers or an Outbacker or Spyder on
75 meters is about right. There is a BIG difference between
"Commercial"ie Hustler Hamstick type antennas and Screwdrivers and Bug
Catchers.

Might be true vs. Hustler on 75 meters (which is about as close to a
dummy load as you can get with an antenna). Not true on other bands,
tho.

Yeah, but that's metric.

On 75 meters during shootouts, namely using the same output power,
or making adjustments for the power going into the antenna, there is
about an 8-11 db difference between well made screwdriver antennas
and most others, with large bugcatchers a notable exception. However
if you want a hamstick, or Hygain, or Hustler antenna among others,
you will find the claimed difference in output. You may not want to
believe it, but almost anyone who bothers to make measurements
that are even remotely calibrated in DB, like using a calibrated
attenuator on a relative scale on the same day gets approximately
the same results. If you use a setup like W6KKT does, the results
are even more believable, but you to can duplicate the results for
yourself. In this case, the larger antennas outperform the thin ones,
and by the way, it seems that on 75 meters, the 400 watt Hustler
antennas outperform their QRO brothers too. Is the ad misleading?
Possibly, but it's accurate for most situations too.

Hi Art,

I tried to explain this to the original poster but apparently was
unsuccessful. Some folks want to believe vendors are basically
dishonest so badly that facts are discarded as inconvenient.

A large part of the problem seems to be one of reading comprehension.
Kurt N. Sterba takes a swipe at Pierre from SGC's claims and it is
interperted as all vendors are raving liars and if you make as
measurement that indicates that one vendor might be telling the truth
then you are an idiot.

As you rightfully point out on 75M the shootout results clearly
indicate significant improvement with a screwdriver over the Hamstick,
Hustler, Spyder, Outbacker class of antenna. This seems to be difficult
for some folks to accept but it observed time after time at the
shootouts.

Come to the National Shootout in New Mexcio next year it should be
educational

Hi William, there were a lot of "suckers" at the 75m mobile shootout
who beat Hustlers and Outbackers by about that amount. Check out
W6MMA's screwdriver vs the Outbacker.
