Any thoughts on the use of a chain link fence as an antenna? I have one
surrounding about an acre, but every ten feet or so a post is set in the
ground, as is typical for a fence. Probably an excellent ground, but any
hope of using it for the actual antenna?

David,

On a lark, I used mine years ago when the ground was frozen solid here in
the Detroit area. The tuner's random wire position worked against the house
plumbing allowed me to QSO the Rocky Mtn. states well on 75m. The tuning
was not predictable or repeatable from night to night as was expected.
When the thaw came a few weeks later, it became an earthworm warmer. Watch
out for all the stray dogs and kids in the neighborhood, as parents get
upset when you fry their offspring.

Merry Christmas,

"David R.Gemmer",
Once upon a time, when I was still gainfully employed,
I had lots of time to play with antennas at work. Due to
my employers restrictions, what was available to play with,
and the amount of $$ I had in my pocket, some of the "make-
do" antennas were a bit unusual. A chain-link fence was
one of those that I played with.
I had/have a tuner that would 'handle' just about any-
thing. This tuner along with a set of 'jumper-cables' for
'delta' matching, made a short fence next to the station
load on 20 meters like a charm! It didn't 'talk' worth a
hoot, but was very quiet on receive. (The same set of
jumper-cables, coax, and tuner also loaded a R.R. track.)
I wouldn't recommend using a fence, but if your really
desperate enough, it'll work. One reason I wouldn't
recommend it is because if your fence is connected to your
neighbor's fence, you're going to be producing RFI all
over the neighborhood!

Probably about the same time (mid 1960s) I was using a Globe Scout,
all of 75 watts or so, and was talking with my normal friends on 15
whwn one of them suggested that my signal wasn't up to its normal
strength. He then asked if I was using another antenna, perhaps the
bedsprings.

I remembered the crib springs leaning against the basement wall. I got
up while others were talking, fetched them, and hooked them to the
antenna terminal. The Scout had a wide range tuning network and would
load into almost anything. I shifted off frequency and tuned up. When
they turned it back to me, I used the springs.

The guy who had made the comment came back and asked what I did, my
signal was up at least 6 dB. I told him that I took his suggestion and
hooked up the bedsprings. Thus some crazy ideas aren't so bad after
all.

Of course within a few days, I has added a bunch of radials under my
dipole and that made everything much better.

The chain link fence wouldn't have worked. My wife hates them so we've
never had one. Now, having just moved, I don't have any antenna up
yet, and I no longer have any crib springs handy. Oh, well...

I would be concerned about safety if it was at all possible someone could
contact the antenna.

Any corrosion or dissimilar metal junctions could arc or become non-linear,
generating harmonics or IMD.

You got that right. I've noticed some weird things things on 160m lately
in that dept. It's real easy to get a bad connection to act as a
rectifier, and it will spew AM broadcast garbage all across the band.
It's like a distorted AM BC birdy every ten kc. I'm having that problem
here, and not sure whats causing it. It's intermitant and sometimes will
just flat instantly disappear, so I think a bad connection somewhere
around here. It may have something to do with all the dang xmas lights
that are plastered all over the house right now. They are effecting my
160 dipole and acting like a reflector a bit. I'll be glad to get that
stuff off the house. I'm also tied into a chain link fence, and that may
well be a problem also. I need to go out and unhook from it and see what
happens. All this mess started recently. My receiver used to be pretty
quiet as far as junk. Somethings goofy around here...But I just checked
right now, and quiet as a mouse. Go figure. When I get it, it's on
either antenna, so not an antenna problem per say. Something else in the
area. MK

Thanks for all the observations. Guess I can use the far fence supports as
supports for a long wire. The fence probably would make a good ground, no?

The fence can be used as a ground for a vertical. fed with balanced line works most bands, second way would be stick a mobile multiband Hustler or other resonators use the fence as a ground.ideally if you have a remotely adjustable coil like a screwdriver mobile antenna stick it somewhere on the fence works great. I wish the fence lays flat on the ground it would work super but then its no lomger a fence. Var N6DBH
