I'ver never tried that antenna, but I'd never want a 2 meter ant on a
trailer hitch.
I'd rather have a shorter antenna on the roof. The collinear may be a
little better if equal mounted, but I don't think it would beat out a
5/8 if the 5/8 was on the roof, and the other was on a hitch at a lower
level. MK

Mark,
I would expect that kind of difference. However an antenna of that size
won't survive on top of a 4X4. If I don't get any responses from those who
may have tried this, I will try it. I would fabricate a short mast so the
base of the antenna clears the tailgate and use an A/B switch to compare
with 5/8 wave mag-mount on the roof.

I use one of those giant whips but not really
while mobile. I use it on the top of my rover
mast. There is usually a horizontally polarized
yagi below that. There are no radials or any type
of ground plane except the mast itself which is
usually about 14' long.

I haven't really been able to A/B them (no switch).
But I say the big stick was much better signal
both directions.

All this was on 2m fm at 1 to 40 watts.
Some phone, some APRS racket.
