The easiest and quickest thing for an intermittent fault
like that might be to check that all the ground screws that
hold the circuit boards to the chassis are firmly tightened
down. Then loosen and reseat all connectors with plugs.
Also moving the various (rotary and other) switches through
their positions may help.
If this doesn't cure the problem then you might try tapping
around the circuitry with a plastic screwdriver or something
similar to see if you can cure the problem (if you can
do this while the problem is present), or cause the problem
(if it is not acting up when you begin the procedure). This
may sound odd, but I found this procedure to be very handy
for 'first step troubleshooting'. It's a refined version of
banging it with your hand to see if the fault clears.
Hopefully this will help. Please let me know how you
make out with it.

I replied to the original post on another news group which didn't make it
over here. I suggested a mild pressure compressed air blowout of the
radio and treating all the available connectors with Caig Labs DeOxite.
As the other person posted in a followup, he might also check the board
screws for being snug enough. If the radio is over a few years old, I
auto change the Lithium Battery (coin cell).
Most good repair shops have a basic list of tests and PM tasks that get
done.... if they're any good.
Many problems with the 430 are caused by simple connector oxidation. Other
reported problems like the final transistor(s) (need) resoldering and cold
solder joints are relatively easy to fix, just a headache to find.
Find a repair shop with someone that has real world experience with
HF radios.
