Yes I know... no active antenna is worth a few feet of wire
outdoors or even indoors ... but better than nothing at all..

I've a Kenwood R-5000, mostly for utility stations listening,and
I'm currently using a Sony AN-1 (Not so bad as I thought...)

I read very opposite opinions about these on deja news ,so
forgive me for asking again an already very debated question.
Which do you think is the better ,no matter the price :

RF Systems DX one pro

Datong A 370

Dressler ARA-60

McKay Dymek DA-100E

MFJ-1024

Or anything else that doesn't need a soldering iron...

But , please, I'm NOT going to buy a Tiny Tenna ...;-((

Thank you for any input.

The Marconi AVK is good enough for the Royal Navy.

I'm currently using the above McKay Dymek on an NRD-525. It works
fine. But a long wire outdoors, at a previous location, worked better.
The active antennas are great, but only if you don't have much outside
space.

Hi Jean

Active antennae are fine for all purpose listening. For successful
interference free reception:

- The antenna's amplifier must be a low noise design having a wide
dynamic range. There should be no signal pickup by the feeder cable.

- The antenna amplifier's output must not be so high that it overloads
the receiver it is feeding.

- The antenna should be located where the local man-made electrical
noise is at a minimum. This can only be accomplished by experiment.

I only have experience of the Datong AD370. I hope this may help you.

At the moment I am only able to use indoor antennae. There is an
incredible amount of electrical noise from domestic appliances.
Furthermore my location is less than 2˝km away from two 1kW MF
broadcast stations with another about 8km away. There are also eight
VHF/FM 500W broadcasters approximately 5km away and numerous other
high power commercial transmitters.

The Datong AD370 is a properly balanced active short dipole. It is
three metres long, has excellent local electrical noise rejection and
nulling capabilities and is broadband from 200kHz to 100MHz. There is
no pickup on the coaxial feeder cable. The antenna is very quiet and
has excellent dynamic range. There is no evidence of overloading by
strong signals, even from the two local MF transmitters.

I have heard amateur and broadcast signals from all over the world.

The antenna can be obtained packaged for indoor or outdoor use. If you
cannot purchase one at a local radio dealer it can be purchased direct
from the manufacturer (with whom I have no connection):

Datong Electronics Ltd.
Clayton Wood Close, West Park, Leeds LS16 6QE, UK.
Tel. +44 113 274 4822 Fax. +44 113 274 2872

The model numbers: Price (no taxes)
AD270 for indoor use only GBP60.--
AD370 for indoor or outdoor use GBP80.--

They will send you a free leaflet if you ask!

Best Wishes
