Three player tic-tac-toe

I didn't see anything about this in the archive. I am asking not to
puzzle people but to get an answer. I haven't seen this game anywhere
else but somebody must have thought of it by now.
Three Player Tic Tac Toe:
In a game of tic tac toe with three players (x, y, z, instead of x,o),
25 spaces and the object still to get three in a row, is the outcome
determinate? (by who goes first) In playing it by myself it seems that y
usually wins, but the game produces some neat effects. Players must
cooperate to prevent the other from scoring, but cooperation has its
limits. Try it out. It may be more determinate than I think, but it is
still kind of neat.

Jay,
I have played this with the kids in my third grade classes--as teams,
rather than individuals (each table being a team, each homeroom represented
in my math class--that one was 4-player!)
We usually do it on a bigger field than 25 spaces--whatever will fit on the
chalkboard--and you have to get 4 in a row, but you're right, the strategy
is amazing! The kids love it!
