It's not obsolete at all. It's still perfectly valid legal tender.
It's just that they are only generally issued for special occasion (I
think one was issued for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.)

Not any more. The line from Oxford to Cambridge closed about 30 years ago
although it might have been about the right distance.

Oxford to Cheltenham is 78 miles.

Non tidal navigable length of the River Thames (Lechlade to Teddington) is
125 Miles. There is a further tidal section of 25 miles to the Thames
Barrier at Greenwich. Where the estuary stops and the North Sea begins is
moot, but maybe 10-20 more miles. Above Lechlade there is at least 15 miles
or more or less un-navigable (except by canoe).
