The solution is printed on the box mine came in.

It says:

However, the solutions for the problems either to
take the star formed assembly out from the cylinder
frame or to put the star formed assembly inside the
cylinder frame is to turn the fourteen (14) to
produce angle variation to enable the star formed
assembly to go in and out of the cylinder frame.

So there you have it!

Seriously though, hold the spikey ball by two
opposite prongs (north and south poles) and
spin it around the polar axis. You will find
three distinct orientations, one with four
prongs around the equator and two other different
ones with no prongs on the equator.

One of the latter two is the one you need - try
both.

Keep a firm grip on the north pole, and starting
with the south pole shove the other prongs through
the side of the cage - you have to keep rotating
the ball around the polar axis as the prongs go in
one at a time. It needs a slight amount of force,
but very little. If it feels like it might break
you're holding the wrong prong.

Martin.
