My grand-daughters Sarah and Catherine, in their never-ending quest to
get enough cash to buy these bars of chocolate, have set up a
shoe-shine stand outside the local bus station, and are doing quite
well too. They can now apply the polish to a pair of shoes in one
minute, and give them a splendid shine in another three minutes.
They have strict orders to catch their bus home which leaves at 6
o'clock prompt, so they were dismayed when three customers approached
them at seven minutes to six. Did they have to disappoint the
customers, or is there a way they could have finished the job in the
time to the total satisfaction of the trio of customers?

Preivously, on 'rec.puzzles',

SPOILER

Assuming that the 1 and 3 minutes are for each individual girl to do said
task...

5:53 Sarah does customer 1's polish and Catherine does customer 2's polish.
5:54 Sarah does customer 3's polish and Catherine does customer 2's shine.
5:55 Sarah does customer 1's shine.
5:57 Catherine finishes customer #2, and starts customer 3's shine.
5:58 Sarah finishes customer #1 and collects all the money :-)
6:00 Catherine finishes customer #3, and both make the bus on time.

It depends if one of their customers was the driver of the bus they were going to get.
And anyway, have you ever known a bus to leave the bus station exactly on time? :-)

5:58 Sarah finishes customer #1 and starts on customer 3's right shoe.
5:58:30 Catherine finishes #3's left shoe.
5:59:30 Sarah finishes #3's right shoe.

Or what about:

It takes 30 sec to polish ONE shoe, and 1:30 to shine ONE shoe, so it
takes 2 minutes per shoe:

5:53 Sarah and Catherine do customer 1 (one on each shoe)
5:55 Customer 1 is done, they do customer 2.
5:57 Customer 2 is done, they do customer 3.
5:59 Customer 3 is done.
5:59-6:00 Off to buy chocolate!
