This have probably been all heard before but anyway....

Name 3 players who have played in A NE, Merseyside, Manchester and
London Derby.
Clue: Paul Stewart is one of them

Name all the cities/towns in england that have 2 or more teams playing
in the English league.

In a certain year a goalie played 3 games at Wembley against 3
different teams and the same player scored against him on each occasion.
Name the goalie, goalscorer, teams and year.

sending someone to conventry is old trade union slang for
the punishment of totally ignoring a work mate who has
broken the union lines. the person sent to conventry would
not be 'noticed' and for as long as it lasted everyone would
work and continue as if he was not here. in a busy
factory/office where constant badinage (sp?) and a friendly
atmosphere was the only good point of a hard job this
reversal was a particularly hurtful punishment. of course as
no physical retribution had taken place there could be no
law about it.

the phrase is now used metaphorically (hmm?)if two people
have had a row and one has stopped talking to the other

(I don't understand the Coventry connection -
have you ever been to coventry ?)

If 12 is Forfar it's a bad clue.

I deduce that th eight-character sequence "’" is a representation
of an apostrophe. It certainly does not look that way on my newsreader.

Can anyone explain how it was generated?

And if it is supposed to be just an apostrophe, why didn't the poster
just use an apostrophe? It is an ASCII character, 27(hexidecimal),
after all.

Brian

ps. It looks like a 26-character sequence (as opposed to eight) here.

pps. My newsreader even identifies them as non-standard character and
wouldn't let me post them (which is why I had to snip them in this response).

As it happens, I did just use an apostrophe !!!
..and it looked ok on my original post....

Why would I go to the trouble of converting a single (') to a 26
character sequence ??????

I don't know, either. (That's what I was hoping to find out.)
For what it's worth, this time the apostrophe stayed an apostrophe.

Maybe your post was routed through a computer which was helpful
enough to convert it for you (for whatever twisted reason it had
for wanting to convert it). Anyone else have any suggestions on
what might have happened and, more interestingly, why it would have
been done. This is starting to puzzle me (as opposed to annoy me
like it has before we got to talking about it).
