a real-life puzzle... (i've been wondering about this for 40+ years.)

(Why boxers go [shh] [shhh] ) Why do boxers make a hissing sound when they punch?

The reason why we Boxers hiss/grunt is because if you simply breath like you normally do, or if you hold your breath while punching (terrible habit), you will wear out so much faster than you would if you’d just exhale as you punch.

Also, you will never be able to punch as hard as you actually can unless you exhale on the shot. It vastly increases that amount of core power you can slip into the punch.
Hissing/grunting applies to punches, kicks, elbows, knees, finishing singles/doubles and even entire combinations, you must exhale on every single action.

_______________ Adding to what people have already stated. Hissing, grunting, exhaling when punching also ensures that you won’t have any air in your core or that your core is in a contracting stage during your punches. ---------- So that if ever you get body punched, you will greatly reduce the chance that you’ll have the “wind knocked off of you” moments and trust me, you don’t want those moments to happen to you during fights. You’ll get severely stunted no matter how good your conditioning is.
