Give away hint:

Well, I would, but it is too hard
for me to draw it on this 2D screen.

The answer as follows:Take four sticks and place them flat forming your first
square as shown bellow

A ------C----B
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
D ------F----E

The second step is to take two sticks and place them on point A and B and
they must join at point C.Do the same for point D and E and F where the sticks
join at point F.ABC and DEF is a triangle ,use the last stick to join C and F
therefore basically forming a roof top.

A side view is as follows:

F

D E
with stick from D to E and E to F and F to D.
The first square is your original one being square ABDE,the second is ACDF and
the third is BCEF.ACDF and BCEF is basically the roof tops.

Dennis, appreciate your try. But it has to be in a same plane, NO 3D.

Those aren't hints, those are rules you forgot to mention. :-)

Well, if for some reason we have to waste a stick and make it look like
it's doing something useful, here's a 9-stick solution:

Congratulation! You got the answer.

That's of course using only 8 sticks.

Abigail -- 5 squares with 6 sticks is easy too.

If we're allowed to think in the third dimension, this works:

form a square on a flat surface.
stand 3 sticks vertically on 3 of the corners.
lay the remaining 2 sticks across the tops of the 3 verticals.

this will look like a floor and 2 adjoining walls having a common
corner. It will also look like 3 squares.

Another 9 stick solution:

hight 1 stick, width 2 sticks

|<...>| = length of 1 stick
