This is probably a FAQ, cause I've seen it here before. But now, I
have an IBM PC, and I care about the answer now. :)
Does Cogix make Crossword Wizard for the PC? I've seen it for the Mac
(It seems to come with it), but I haven't been able to locate the PC
version.
Is there anything better on the market than Crossword Wizard?

Yes, Cogix makes Crossword Wizard for the PC. I have a copy of their
version 1.0 for the PC.

IMHO, yes. Check out Crossword Compiler for Windows (available as
shareware from many download sites, including <http:///www.jumbo.com>).
This program does *not* automatically generate clues, as Cogix's program
does; however, the quality of words with which it fills grids and the
flexibility in designing puzzle shapes (you're not limited to squares, or
even rectangles) combine to make this the superior program, in my opinion.

Have fun. If you would like to see a sample auto-filled puzzle from each
of these programs, contact me by e-mail.

In article <3vb3rb$k...@big.aa.net>, com...@big.aa.net says...

As maintainer of The Puzzle Post web site, I have tried copies of
the following Windows programs:

Crossword Wizard
Crosswords Plus (by Parsons Technology)
Crossword Compiler
Sympathy
Crossword Express (we act as author's agent)

I'm somewhat biased, but I personally prefer Crossword Express and
Crossword Compiler. Crossword Compiler is a bit more intuitive than
Crossword Express for direct grid manipulation and has a nice word lookup
utility for pattern matching. Our cryptic crossword setter, Caspian,
uses Crossword Compiler and we post the results as Gif images at our
Puzzle Post site.

Our Crossword Express package offers a batch mode wherein you may
auto-create several puzzles at one time. It also offers powerful
clipboard export commands. The included dictionary has somewhat obvious
clues, but it still offers a good value for puzzle enthusiasts. You may
input up to 20 user words with clues, and it will then autofill the
remainder of the lattice from any or all of its 3 dictionaries.

You may use the download links from our software page to try out several
shareware packages at URL:

There is a fairly decent program for DOS called Word Weaver. It costs about $100
and is available from Charles W. Clapp, 1106 Pebble Beach Bl., Sun City Center,
FL 33573. The great things about it are that you can edit the word lists and
create your own special theme word lists. The worst part of the program is
that it's visually hard to read with on screen. Aside from that I found it
to be a pretty good program to work with.

Hope this helps.
