Can someone tell my why my pond water is a brownish color - not green if its
suppose to be algae, but how can it have algae when the weather has not been
warm enough? Also, why aren't my koi growing, They are about the same size as
I bought them last year.

Not enough information yet to hazard a guess.

How big is your pond ? How many/how big fish ? What water changes do you do? How
is it filtered/aerated?

I had the brown water problem. I was told that it was algae. Try an algae
treatment. I've also found that problem with feeding, the water gets nasty
either from left-over food (although my koi RARELY leave any left-overs) or
waste. Usually if I replace the filter media or as a last resort, replace the
activated carbon; it all goes away within 12 hours. If you don't have a
filter with filter media, make one:
I bought a large plastic flower pot from Wal-Mart, drilled a 1.5" hold in the
bottom, put a drain cover over the hole, put a layer of lava rocks (to keep
from occluding the hole), put a piece of furnace filter media, put a layer of
activated charcoal, a layer of filter floss then another piece of furnace
filter on top. Pump the water to the top and let it gravity feed down. Most
expensive piece of this is the activated charcoal (not counting the pump if
you don't already have one).

Just my $.03 worth (all taxes, gratuities and shipping included)

Sorry to sound so "happy" but I thought I was the only one in the
U.K./fish keeping community with "brown algae". I've got a 1000 gallon
pond, water goes through the filter every 2 hours, a 8 WATT U.V.
....... Oh, and some goldfish, and Brown tinged algae/water.

You probably have lots of stuff that has fallen into the pond over the winter-
when it warms up you can get in and muck it out. After a few days it will probably
clear up.

They don't eat during the winter so growth is minimal. When they start feeding
again you will see some growth, but I don't believe koi grow as fast as goldfish,
although they grow to be larger.
