This weekend, I observed one of the goldfish trying to swim
up towards the waterfall -- but to do this it has to negotiate
a series of rapids. It seemed to be pretending to be a salmon!
I wonder -- is this behavior typical or does it indicate that
the goldfish is about to spawn (like Salmon), or does it say
that they are bored and looking for adventure?

For the skeptical among you, I made a very short realvideo
clip of this -- check out

Hi Philip,

From time to time it seems this question pops up. And from what I've seen
(I may be wrong, please correct me if I am) it seems that small koi do this
more than anyone else.

You didn't tell us how long ago the pond (or waterfall for that matter)
became the new home of this stream happy fish.

ALL of my fish did this when they were added to the pond. I'd go out every
hour or so and heard them back into the pond. No losses, I was lucky.

On an interesting side note. My two baby fish (I dare not call them fry...
they're growing by leaps and bounds and now school with the rest of them)
did not exhibit this behavior. And they seem to get the least upset when I
redocorate.

My big comet will uproot everything new in the pond, and heaven forbid if I
put plants in the stream... seems I spent all day today hearding him back to
the pond. The small guys? Didn't even seem to notice the new hiding spots
and munchies I put in.

So, to make this short:

Is this a new behavior for an established fish? (If so, could have
problems!) Or is this a new fish? In which case he should stop in a few
days.

My FIL, who knows a lot about edible fish, says that all fish
like to swim upstream. Since many here have observed their
fish "surfing" in the current from venturis and pumps, my guess
is that he is right. I used to have a large fish - can't
remember if it was a gf or koi, who used to try to beach himself
on the rocks every time it rained. I used to have to go out
there in the rain and put a folding baby fence inside the edge
of my pond, making sure there weren't any spots where they could
trap themselves in the process.
btw, I watched that clip over and over. It was fun. He should
be too tired now to do it anymore. I really worked him out. : )

This is one of my original feeders from last september - so he can
scarcely be called new. Since there is only one (I think) out of 15
doing this, I'm hoping that he is just doing it for the fun of it!
I suspect also that a fair number of bugs and insects get washed
down the waterfall from a (fishless, but frogged) top pond, so he
may be keen to get more food.

Actually there is no picture of the waterfall, but the website
(rather like the pond itself) is a work in progress!

I really like the style of your pond. I read your web page, and
it seems to me that it would be good to absolutely load that top
pond with plants to form a veggie filter. I know your luck
w/plants isn't too good right now, but if you go with super-
simple types like hyacinth or pickerel, and lots of anacharis
(submerged, not floating), it should help. Also, for suspended
algae, nothing has worked for me like pea gravel. You could
line that stream bed (it looks fairly flat in the pics)with some
sort of porous tray and fill it with pea gravel. It would make
a sort of bog. Then you could also plant that with watercress.
Of course, I realize you didn't ask for this much input, but
you seemed dismayed by the algae in the notes included on the
page.
I still like the video clip, and the underwater camera.

No problem.

Our goldfish still regularly migrate from pond to pond along our stream
'till they find one they like after 3 years. They will occasionally go
downstream too. I've given up on trying to stop them. In our situation,
there is a mass migration every time it rains at night. I think it has
something to do with the additional stream flow when it rains.

Also, the larger ones seem to pick a pond and stay there. I think they are
territorial to some extent and when a pond becomes overcrowded to their
perception, the newer/younger ones will try to move on upstream to get away
from the "City Dwellers." That, or they can "feel" the cleaner water coming
from upstream and they want to get to the supply.
