first floater :(

Hey all

about 4 weeks into my ponding hobby, I lost one of the original
fantails that I put in to test the waters. I checked it out, and didnt
see anything obvious disease-wise, just looked like the other fish
nipped at it a little post mortem.
The koi are doing fine, but I dont know what else to do when a fish
dies in the pond.

any special treatments or tests, besides the standard water tests?

Sometimes fish just die for no apparent cause - it has happened to me.
However, yours being a new pond I would be interested in water chemistry.
In warm water the bio filter should have cycled in four weeks (ammonia>
nitrites> nitrates). Are the fish gasping at the surface in the morning?
(yes= low O2)

You need to be aware of fish behavior that is not normal - that is usually
the first indicator of a problem. You learn what is normal fish behavior by
carefully observing a healthy pond over the seasons, and/or by reading
everything you can get you hands on about fish health. Look at our fish
