Hi,
We have a 1000 gall pond. We had two large goldfish and then a dozen or so
small, 9 month old goldfish about an inch or so long.
Our two large fish disappeared two nights running- we guess taken by an
heron but now there seems to be very few small fish left. Surely an heron
would not bother with them. We have a toad in the garden, would he eat them?

Toads are insect eaters and quite beneficial. I wish I had more of them.

Toads don't hunt in water. They are land critters after they change from
tadpoles.

Little fish can become prey to big fish, dragonfly larva, bullfrogs and
labradors.

A heron will eat any size of fish up to the largest he can swallow. Toads
are not likely to eat your fish (except perhaps at mating season when
they're spending a lot of time in the pond).

Bull frogs on the other hand will eat anything that will not eat them.
Including koi up to 5" or so. I once saw a big bull try to eat a snake. He
took almost all of the snake but could not get his head. The snake got
lodged between a few rocks and pulled himself out of the frog's gut.

They're not thinking about food at that time. :-) Afterwards, though,
you may see the glows of tiny little cigarettes.

If the goldfish disappeared at night, I would guess that you've either got a
raccoon in the area who likes fishy midnight snacks, or you have a cat who likes to
fish! You could try putting a mesh cover over the pool at night and see if that
stops the losses.
