It fades them out....that is why they are put into clay ponds to "finish" them
off. The sun doesn't penetrate and the colors intensify. This is done in
Japan....not sure if many american breeders do it. There is a well known
Japanese/American man in Fallbrook Calif. who does this. I went to an auction
there at his fish farm, and the koi were sold for 10's of thousands of dollars

I think it may be the clay the koi ingest that actually improves their
color, not the absence of sun.
