We have a crack in our preformed pond. It is about 4 inches long and from
the lower water level area up over the rounded lip where there is a seat for
plants. What is the best way to repair this? A pond store employee told me
to try to melt the plastic around it and kind of weld it together. That did
not work well at all. Plastic did not want to melt. Any ideas would be
great!!

Also has anyone used 2 preformed ponds together? I want to put 2 ponds next
to each other and possibly have the one run into the other. Do I need to cut
the plastic on the one to have it run into the other? Also how would I keep
the smaller (upper one) clean. I want to use one pump and one filter. Do I
need two pumps and two filters?

One more question- This may be silly but do fish live in families? I want
to separate some of my fish by putting them into separate ponds. Would this
disturb them? There are babies in our pond.

Thank you very much!!

Brad,

We have two preform ponds. Lets see if I can hel p you.

1) The guy at the pond store was an idiot. Even if you could melt it, you
would loose some stability, I would think.

2) If you want to have the ponds connected, the best way to do that would
be to buy preforms with a "spillway" and have one pond above the other. Put
your pump and filter in the lowest pond, run your hose up to you high pond.
I would not cut into a preform to form a spillway. Again, you loose some
strength to the form.

3) If you can't put one pond "above" the other with a spillway, the next
option is two pumps. This one is VERY tricky. You have to have both pumps
outputting the same. Basically you've got one pump and filter kicking water
into pond number 2. Then you've got a pump in pond 2 kicking water back
into pond 1 for filtration. The problem comes if your pumps vary at all!
One pond will be going dry while the other overflows.

If at all possible, get the pond with a spillway. McCourt as several,
although they are more expensive than your Beckett "Home Depot" type. Look
around, and if you can't find one locally, go to the internet. Several
places will ship them, although again, you pay an arm and a leg for
shipping.

Now then, as much as we all like preforms (those that subscribe to the
theory at least) I'm assuming you've already emptied your pond in an attempt
to repair the crack. So you got this nicely shapped whole in the ground
right? Have you thought about getting a liner and putting it in the whole
instead of a new preform?

Use some good quality liner joining tape and a piece of liner. The
pet store gave my sister-in-law a piece of both and it worked perfect.
Is your pond still under warranty? Most of them have good warranties
so you might be able to get a replacement.

The person who said "try to melt it" was off base.
I'd be very cautious taking advice from them about
anything from now on.

As stated earlier, pond tape should work.
Also it's been posted here by some of the porg that the clear
hot glue sticks will also work and you can rough it up and use
silicone sealer.

I patched a crack in my preform using a "scab" method.
I cut out a scab of copper sheet. (flashing material)
I buttered the back of the scab heavily with silicone sealer
and pop riveted it over the crack with aluminum pop rivets.

Over kill?? Maybe but I am a "Tim Taylor, home handyman" kind
of guy and I already had all the tools and supplies to do this.
We tend to use what we have available.

My main question to you is WHY did you get a crack?????
Do you have a void under that area?? If so it's going to get
worse not better. You must have support all around under
a preform or it's gonna crack!

Good luck!!
Peace!
