It was overcast, about 3:30 p.m., and I was handholding the camera, so
I shot it at f/2, aperture priority, to get a fast enough shutter
speed. Camera is an Elan IIe, with a 85mm f/1.8 lens, Fujicolor Super
HQ film, asa 100. Fill light was from a white cardboard reflector.

As always, your feedback is appreciated.

The image could use some sharpening...

I don't mind this one. The main difference between this one and some of the
others you've posted here is there is some direction to the main light on
the subject's face. Could still have been a bit more difference between the
ambient fill and the main light...to give your image a 3 dimensional quality
and tell us something about your subject's face. I wasn't there, but could
you have moved your reflector even closer? And I have found tripods for
portraits a must...makes sure your subject's eyes are sharp and allows you
the ability to interact with your subject without a camera between you.

I like the picture--the subject is very emotive, particluarly around the
eyes, a fact you've enhanced through your critical focus and aperture
selection. The bokeh is very pleasing, too.
Well done.
Does the image need sharpening? If so, just around the eyes, and then not
much.

Overall very nice, but I think I'd have used a goldenrod (gold-yellow)
reflector, and perhaps a DIFF filter. A gold reflector would have warmed the
situation up a bit, and the DIFF would, well, made 'bro look like a pro.
Still in all a nice pose.

Better scanning / sharpening?
A little less fill light? Or reposition to get more "character" lines
contrasted?
Blue shirt/blue eyes: good color selection.

It's a nice shot overall. The background is smooth, oof.

Cheers,
Alan

I'd add that you might have gotten a bit more sharpness at f/4 or so,
and this would have gotten you more DOF too...maybe scrificing the
smooth background some? A well braced hand held shot can be done slower
than 1/FL with a little care.

Hi, I'm new to the group, but I would like to say something about this
portrait: the pose is very good, the light conditions are great, the
expresion in your subject is also great. Very expressive, very live. I find
the palm leaves above and behind the hat somewhat distracting, I can't take
my eyes out of them. Also, the round white patch (it's a logo of flower?) on
the sweater is very distracting, too bright, to big, I would say that it
competes with the face a lot. One other thing I found unappealing to the
subject is that the upper part of his face is darker than the lower part,
maybe the reflector was too close to his chin and the angle wasn't the
proper one to cover the whole face evenly. All in all, the portrait is
great, and in my opinion it could be sold as stock photo if you remove the
logo.

Anyway, my opinion only.

Best regard to everybody and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Eduardo Marquez-Blake
