Can anyone point me to info on the web (or anywhere) about painting your own
muslin backgrounds? I'm interested in Old Master styles in different color
palettes. Buying one of each I want would cost more than I can afford, so I
got to thinking about painting my own.

Thanks in Advance

There is a section in Photographing in the Studio by Gary Kolb that may be
of assistance. I read it several years ago, experimented and came up with
some nice backdrops.

there was a recent thread on this.

but muslin probably isn't a good medium for an old master style
background. that is traditionally been painted on thicker canvas.

get some canvass and buy some household latex paint and a few sponges
and brushes.

Not that easy. First off, unless you have extensive experience in painting
backgrounds, I wouldn't bother. muslin is a light material, once you put
paint on it- it will be heavy, thick, and will easily crack. Never mind the
flattening issue. "flat paints" are not flat enough for photographic use.
Plus, there are very few flatting additives that are actually flat enough
for photographic use as well.

PLUS, most muslins are actually dyed, not painted - even harder to get a
blended old masters look.

Why not start off with purchasing a grey old masters and start playing with
coloured gels to give you different coloured backgrounds? You will have to
learn how to control your light (-3 stops minimum of fall off from subject
to background if you want a vivid colour from your gelled background light).

Where in the heck do you come up with this bull dong
information??????????????

The above sentence is totally bull poop information. We have at least a
dozen painted muslin backgrounds that we have painted at the studio. They
are not heavy. Two of them are 20' X 19' and they are not heavy. They are
not think and they do not crack. They are easily waded and stuffed into a
laundry bag. If you want to use one with a complete smooth look to it hang
it up a few hours before the shoot and mist it with warm water.

Never mind the
> flattening issue. "flat paints" are not flat enough for photographic use.

And your experience here on this subject is a total ignorant post. We use
flat paints daily at our commercial studio. Do you just make up this garbage
or do you really believe it?

> Plus, there are very few flatting additives that are actually flat enough

Never needed them. What we do to paint our muslin cloth is first size it. To
size it we take (depending on size of cloth) about 5 gallons of water to one
gallon of flat white paint and paint the cloth. After that has dried we
crumple the cloth several times. then the colors are added with rollers and
the ratio is mixed anywhere from 1 to 6 gallons of water to gallon of flat
paint.

Again not totally factual information.

Why not do both?

You will have to

Again the above statement is not 100% accurate and factual.

Maybe in the old days but as usual Z with your head in the mud you are not
open to change. We do not use any old heavy canvas backgrounds. Mostly we
use our cove but then we move into old master style hand painted muslin.

Stick your ass in the air, Eric, and wait to the breeze to
wipe it clean. Your opinions stink, so go back to your
pornography and stop giving your advice... If you want
someone to talk to, you have Cliff. The abuse you have
subjected women to in your fake modeling scams should
have you sitting in a prison.

Who is "we"? (see above)
You are a pornographer and the only "we" would be you
and Cliff and some prostitutes from a recent shoot... right?

You know what you can do with your hack opinions, right
Eric Scott???

Let's do lunch!

I'm not a pornographer. I'm not an assistant to Eric. Another libelous
post of yours with the fake e-mail address that Hotmail closed for abuse (as
they did with your others). That simple. Even more simple: stop your
libelous posts.

Mr. Puppet,
Why do you so desire to argue? Why is it that when looking at the other
places on the net that you post, all your posts are those involved in
other flame wars (those which don't even involve us)? Is it that
everybody hates you so much, or do you just pick fights because it
is fun? Is this all done to entertain your clients, whom you claim sit
around your webtv unit with you, giggling and posting flames? We
believe you to be a scam... much like all the "scam?" postings that you
and Mr. Eric post in alt.models every day in your attempt to try to
protect everybody from everything when in reality, it's to make YOU
look legit so you can spin your own yarns. We told you: Forever
Clifford.

Where else is there a fight? You are the only one that posts the malicious
lies you do.

I don't care what you believe, lady. You will stop your libelous posts.

I don't post "scam". However, you have posted many in just the past week.

I am not "I make shadows" and you can not point to a single post where I
post "scam". That's your game, lady. Stop your libelous posts. That
Simple.
