What to look for in Scottland

The first week, we will be following the Rob Roy Trail (part of us on
horseback, the rest via auto), and the 2nd week we'll be hanging out and
touring from the Isle of Skye.
What are some good photo ops I should be looking for (I'll be bringing a D1
with lenses from 17 to 500mm)?

Jon, you can expect to find a use for all focal lengths,
17mm landscape to 500mm wildlife. As Liz noted, you can
expect midge problems on the west coast and Skye in Jul/Aug
when the wind is light and the sun isn't out. You can buy a
head-mesh (fine 'no-see-um' mesh) to keep them out, otherwise
you could be driven insane.
My web site has lots of Scottish landscape pictures to give
you some idea of what you might find. On Skye you need to visit
the Cuillin and the Trotternish ridge, but you will find photo-
opportunities everywhere.

In my experience midge repellants just encourage the blighters and
the best you can hope for is death on touchdown. The barrier method
is preferable, you do end up looking a bit daft, but you get the
last laugh.

chiggers can't bite through them. I used to get routinely chided and
ridiculed by new members of the unit when they'd see me putting them on in
preparation. However, upon return, I would laugh without mercy at their
"chigger dance"[1]. I don't rightly care what a proper defense looks like!

both hands right at the boot-top of the other foot, alternating back and
forth between feet. Men have literally been hospitalized from them, they get
so fierce down in the Carolina's.

But seriously, I believe you. I knew a Marine who went to Desert Storm, and
he had his mom send him
"Skin So Soft" by Avon because he swore it worked better for bugs than Off
or DEET or whatever the Marines gave them over there...where apparently
there are strange little biting critters in the desert...the guys chided him
that he smelled like a woman.....
Personally, I have discovered Naturapel, whose active ingredient is
citronella. It's safer than putting carcinogens on one's skin, and really
works. The Coleman bug bullet works to...with an AA battery. It emits a tiny
noise that repels bugs.

I think that chiggers and midges are the same thing? I think no see'ums are

Clegs have a dreadful bite, but I've only had one bite in the past twenty
years, which seems like tempting fate. I found the only thing which stopped
it throbbing was hydrocortisone.
Anyone tried the new Bite-click devices? I'm unconvinced, but Wanderlust
magazine gave them a travel award.

We have those in the Canyonlands/Colorado Plateau
region of (mostly) Utah. They hatch in early June and
stay around until killed off by the heat (sometimes
into late july/early august). I've been
there (Canyonlands) when they are
thick--thousands per cubic meter!
Nothing stops them. The skin-so-soft is a rumor--it
doesn't work. No insect repellants stop them.
Another rumor is cheap smelly perfume, but you
must use an entire bottle at a time.
Netting works.

Not the same as midges then, as good repellant stops them biting, and
mosquito milk keeps them off.
Huh, with gnat swarms in Colorado and horse flies and deer flies in
Yellowstone, I'm more and more dreading my US trip.

In general, the bugs in yellowstone, and utah, colorado,
and wyoming (western US for that matter) are not that
bad, except mosquitoes in isolated wetland areas
(and the gnat swarms in the canyonlands region in early
june). A little DEET or other repellant is all that is
needed to keep the bugs off (except not the gnats).
I've never had a horsefly problem in Yellowstone (actually
don't even recall beeing bit by one).
Mosquitoes are more plentiful in the US than in Europe
(we have screens on all windows), but away from (standing) water
they are rarer. And a little repellant works fine for
many hours.
You will have a mervelous time, I predict.

It comes in a roll-on bottle, in the UK inside a box, and, critically for
recognition, you only "apply several stripes over exposed parts of the body.
Total coverage is not necessary" which should help you recognise it if it's
under a different name. The one I just got is 20% Deet.
Even in the UK it isn't widely available - no marketing at all that I have
ever seen! I found it by sheer accident in my local chemist's/pharmacy,
having tried everything else they had and found them useless. It is
apparently available in all branches of Boots, but you have to ask for it in
the smaller branches, though the one I got was out on a shelf in one of the
big Glasgow branches.

My blood is 90% chocolate.
I had 100% Deet on my shirt, a T-shirt underneath (yes, it was hot!) and 80%
Deet on my skin, and they were biting me through everything.
That's why I wouldn't like to guarantee that Mosquito Milk would work there.
In Europe mozzies are a real nightmare in Eastern Austria, near the
Hungarian border. I believe also so in northern Finland, but haven't been
there.

At least the gnats should be mostly gone--the heat seems to
kill them off! If it is too hot down low, just head for
higher country, even the mountains.

Mosquitoes in the western US are nothing compared
the the everglades (except perhaps in very isolated
pockets). I consider them to be just an annoyance in
most places rather than a real problem (like those
gnats--I won't go to canyonlands in june).

Hmm? AFAIK, it's still legal to sell products containing DEET in the
U.S. What's no longer legal is advertising them as "safe for kids", and
they have to have more warnings about applying to children.
I still try to avoid using it whenever possible...the fact it can melt
plastic is a little worrisome for me, and a lot worrisome for my camera

So long as you don't get a tupperware sky (flat overcast, either white or
pale grey) you will get beautiful photos almost anywhere in Scotland.
