I am working on getting up to speed on making nice brochure type photos
of small products. Jelly jars, baskets and other items like this. I am
unsatisfied with my current set up of several lamps shining down on a
white backdrop.

I am thinking that I need to upgrade to light diffusers or some type of
tent that will diffuse the light. Any online sites that might describe a
reasonable cheap straightforward way to achive good (superb not
neccessary) results? Even some pictures of other studio setups would get
me thinking in the right direction.

You could probably find a book on Table Top Product
photography.

Get some shower curtain liner cloth, white nylon ripstop
etc. hang it and see if that helps. If could some large
white reflector boards to bounce your lights off of.

There are specialized products for shooting table top stuff,
special tables with a curved back, a second layer that is
transparent so you can float your item, and places to clamp
lights and reflectors handily.
