Photography magazines: which do you suggest?

I'm a beginning photographer who takes pictures as a hobby and also
shoots sports, theatre, etc. for my college yearbook. I've never had
any instruction, but I have a pretty nice camera for beginners (the
rebel xs) and I've been fiddling around with how to use it. I'm also
interested in learning how to shoot portraits, etc, as the reason I
started all this in the first place was I love to take pictures of people
I love. Something with a bit of a modeling slant every now and then
would be nice, too.

I don't know much about photography magazines at all. Could someone
who reads a few suggest one that might work for me (based on the
information above--yes, it did have a purpose!)?

Congratulations on choosing a fine hobby. I read several photography
magazines regularly. Based on your description of interests, I would
recommend 2 magazines. Peterson's PHOTOGRAPHIC is readily available and
covers all aspects of photography including sports and portraits. They
have a monthly column by Gary Bernstein, a celebrity portrait
photographer. I would also recommend Shutterbug. They have a different
focus each month with several regular columns. Portraiture including
modeling along with wedding/studio techniques are common.

Both magazines are written in easy to understand language with lots of
explanations. Hope this helps.
