With autumn descending -- we are working on a few transitions of our own.
A Civil War Odyssey
It is with great pleasure that we introduce our November feature "Eye of
the Storm", a Civil War Odyssey, based on the drawings, paintings and
writings of Union Soldier Robert Knox Sneden. Produced by Journal E in
conjunction with Simon and Schuster to coincide with the publication of
a hard cover book and nationally touring exhibit, this online
presentation will take you on a tour of America during the Civil War
that you are unlikely to forget.
From his encounters during the Seven Days Battles, to his close
proximity to top Union officers during his duty as a map maker and to
his eventual capture by the Confederates and imprisonment at
Andersonville, Georgia, Robert Sneden was a man whose wry observations
paint a piercingly honest account of one of the most significant events
in American history. His richly detailed drawings and watercolors bring
these accounts to life. Through images, words, animated movies, and
interactive forums, we invite you to share in this unique personal story.
You can also read about the astonishing discovery of this body of work
and keen detective work by the Virginia Historical Society, through an
interview with the Society's director, Charles F. Bryan, Jr. The
nationally touring exhibit kicks of this month in New York at The New
York Historical Society where Journal E has installed kiosk based
presentations

by Virginia based photographer Jan Faul. These images speak to the
haunted beauty of the very ground on which so many Americans fought
during the Civil War.
Mathew Brady Studio - A select set of images from the vast Mathew Brady
collection will allow you to see actual photographs of many of the
people and places in "Eye of the Storm"
Both Battlefield Parks and The Mathew Brady Studio are presented in
conjunction with Masters of Photography.
