The Pentax K1000 new will probably cost less than a used Nikon FM-2...
both are very good, basic manual cameras. But as is the case with
Nikon you pay more for the name. The Nikon has a few more features that
may be important such as Depth of Field preview and multiple exposure
feature. You will not be able really to tell the photographs apart
quality wise. I used a Nikon FM with a Nikkor 35mm f:2.8 and a Nikkor
105mm f:2.5. I switched to the Pentax LX with similar lenses by Pentax
and the only way I know what camera took what photo is the date on
the photo... I was planning to upgrade my equipment so I looked at
the Nikon F-3, Canon F-1, and the Pentax LX. At that time.. The Pentax
had all the features I was looking for. The main thing in choosing
a camera is what the person using it is comfortable with. A camera
that someone is not comfortable with ends up in the closet, not being
used. So I would suggest trying each of the cameras and see which ones
feel better (ergonomics) Any of the cameras on the market from the
major makers (Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Yashica etc)
are all pretty good. So enjoy your hobby.

As for my personal reccomendation (yes, I know you didn't ask, but
I'm going to give it to you anyway), I use a FM2 at work and a
K1000 on my own, and both are very good cameras. IMHO, the K1000 is
the best buy on the market for a fully manual camera. However, the
regular K1000 only has a ground-glass focusing system, while the FM2
and the K1000 SE (which is what I own) both have the split-screen
systems. Also, I heard some distressing news recently- that some few
years ago, Pentax switched their manufacturers, and now the K1000's
are being made with plastic parts instead of metal, and hence they
break easier. Anybody know anything more about this?

Check out the mail order survey before buying anything from Cambridge
Camera Exchange. There have been numerous stories from dissatisfied
customers.

My opinions only, not those of my employer.
The FM2 is a good solid camera. I would buy this camera if you plan to
keep it for a long time and possibly have the value appreciate. Also,
look for the black body if you can.

: Well, looking in the June issue of Shutterbug (THE magazine to go to to
: look at mail-order prices), B&H is selling a k1000 w/F2 at $160 (new) and
: and a FM2 body for $400 (new). In both cases, I would look for used
: cameras-
: in the same issue, Cambridge Camera Exchange lists a k1000 body for 90$ and
: with a little looking, I'm sure you can find a used FM2 for about $200-250
: (without lens)
Just bought a K1000 at B&H. Thanks to the drop in the value of the
dollar vs. the yen, the "discontinuance" of the K1000 (for, I was told,
the fifth time), and the fact that everybody wants one, the price is
now (as of the last week in July) $169.95, body only.
Cambridge claims not to have any more.
Several other places I called either did not have K1000's or had them
for the same price as B&H.
