I am looking for books that cover the lighting techniques used by movie
studio photographers like George Hurrell.

Recently, there have been a couple of articles (Photo Techniques?) and a
book published about Mr. Hurrells work. The main gist of the story is he
used reletively simple equipment (A Verito soft focus lens was apparently
one of his favorites, although he used it well stopped down), Fresnel lensed
spot lights, and lots of negative retouching.

You might want to find _Painting With Light_ John Alton, (1949) New
York, The Macmillan Company.
Although aimed at cinematography the book discusses portrait
lighting for both stills and movies.
John Alton was a well known director of photography in the old days,
about the only one who ever wrote anything about actual lighting
practices. One of his excercizes is learning to light an orange so
that the pores don't show. Previous to about 1965 no one in Hollywood
had pores.
Larger libraries may have the book or be able to get on interlibrary
loan. FWIW, the call is 778 A469

I am not sure if it would help but try the American Ciniematographer's Manual
and past issues of American Ciniematographer Magazine.

I think Hurrell put out a few, both collections of his work,
and how to's. Mark Viera (SP?) has spent his career if not
duplicating Hurrell's work, then continuing it.

Also, look at the work of Yousef Karsh.

True the photographer can make amazing transformations, but its so much
easier with better raw material. Its tough to make someone 5' tall look
5'11".
