You may need to cock the shutter to remove the lens.
You may need the dark slide properly in place to remove the film
magazine.
Here's a site with copies of the Kowa 66 manuals.

I don't know that camera, but do you need to insert a dark slide to
remove the back?
Are the body and lens out of sync (shutter cock?).

The Kowas were never too good for quality control. Get your money back.
Hi Daniel, This is a problem that kowas have occasionally. It is
easily fixed. You have to unscrew the base plate(in which the
tripodmount is made). This gives access to all the mechanism involved
in coordinating the shutter cocking, freeing of the mechanism for
shutter release and film back release. You will see a couple tabs on a
sliding metal plate.these tabs lock the prongs on the film back onto
the body. You should be able to slide the plate across with a moderate
push with a blunt metal object.this also releases a tab which stops
the shutter button being depressed.
You should carefully inspect the mechanism before you do this so
that you under stand what moves what in there. It's worth it .the Kowa
super 66 is a great camera, mine have been ultra reliable until the
dreaded lockup occurred after 30 years of service. If I want a really
good picture I don't use my D80.Just load up with velvia 50 and
go.Good Luck...Chilli
