Hi

I am after a tripod with a horizontal fitting on it or a fitting to go on a
standard tripod. I have looked in most mags and around the internet, but
have come up empty handed.

I need this tripod for taking pictures of art work which either lays flat on
the floor or a table top. An example of the type of thing I am after can be
seen at the following links

Horizontal fitting http://www.pt2.co.uk/tripod/tripod-horizontal.jpg
Table Top http://www.pt2.co.uk/tripod/tripod-table.jpg

I am interested in either new or secondhand but do not want to take out a
2nd mortgage to pay for it. If someone has one for sale or knows of a
supplier, please make contact.

I apologise if this is not the correct newsgroup, if not please direct me to
one that may be able to help

Thanks
Will

So what's the budget? I Believe the Bogen Carbon series tripods have a model
which will do just that. The center column can be mounted horizontally.
Hmm...a copy stand with lights comes to mind, but I expect you have already
ruled that option out for some reason.

Both Manfrotto (rebadged as Bogen in the US, which I think is the
importer)and Gitzo sell what you want - Manfrotto being cheaper (a lot
cheaper) Assuming the Freeserve address means you really are in the UK
then most dealers now sell Manfrotto tripods and most should be able to
get what you want. It is variously called Lateral arm, repro arm or cross
arm. A clamp replaces your existing tripod head, and the lateral arm is
then clamped into it. Your existing head then screws onto the lateral arm.

Another alternative, is Benbo tripods or Uni-Lock tripods. The design of
the centre column on these allow it to be swung at right angle to the
tripod legs. Gitzo also make a tripod with a similar offset centre column.

A brief look in some phot mags this morning showed several dealers selling
Manfrotto and Gitzo tripods (Vic Oddens, Jessops, CameraWarehouse). What
wasn't immediately obvious was anyone selling Bembo or Unilock.

Before I propose a hardware fix, how about putting the flat art on a wall
and shooting it with what you have? Otherwise, invert your center column
and place the artwork between the legs. Other solutions will include
recommendations for hardware, but you don't want to spend money.

Its standard on a lot of Manfrotto Tripods. The Vertical tube can be mounted
horizontally.

What you really want is often called a copy stand.

I do quite a lot of this kind of work for a local art galery, but I always
put it under a 45 degree angle. No problem shooting this way.

The tripod in the pic appears to be a Getzo - they have lots of
attachments and options.
