I'm looking at purchasing a used ETRS this afternoon and was wondering
if someone could please tell me the difference between it and the
ETRSi... other than price. I've been to Bronica's website and read
about the i-model, but it doesn't tell about the ETRS. Also, is there
anything in particular I should check out on the ETRS model; i.e., any
problem areas to be aware of? The camera does appear to be in excellent
condition, but the lens looks like it's been around a while. The glass
is excellent; just some cosmetic problems on the outside of the lens
barrel.

Thanks,

I previously owned an etrs. I found a problem with the backs and the cable
release socket. The backs would not load or even advance properly,
(although it was itermintent), and the cable release socket started to
revolve when a cable release was being attached. Also my original 75 mm
lens was not sharp at any aperture. Needless to say I got rid of it as soon
as could afford another brand of medium format. ( I bought it new for
school). The only advantage of it was the grip that came with it, (it was a
special, otherwise it is an optional accessory) ,makes the camera hand
holdable with a prism finder.

I don't know all the differences (if there are lots)... but possibly a major
one is that the ETRS does not have mirror lock-up, the ETRSi does.

I own an ETR and an ETRS -- have not had any of these problems. As with any
camera, I'm sure there are problems with certain units more than others... but
overall I think the ETR series is reliable (in my experience).

A properly working ETRS body, not too used, will work just fine. The
main advantages to the ETRSi is that its probably a newer body and
perhaps not used as much. In terms of features over the ETRS, the ETRSi
has:
1. Mirror lock up.
2. TTL circuits. Be aware you need an expensive chord and a dedicated
Metz flash to use this. For studio work this would never be used and
many on camera flashes, like Vivitar 283/285s, work just fine in their
auto mode.
3. The i looks a little groovier.
4. The i backs have a positve darkslide lockout.
5. Supposedly the i body has better mirror damping. There have been no
comments or problems about the ETRS mirror damping.

In terms of lenses, all PE lenses are excellent. Comments on their
quality range from almost as good to as good as Hassleblad. There are
too many lenses to comment on specifically here. In terms of two common
lengths, avoid the 75/2.8 MC as it simply isn't optically very good and
uses 58mm filters (all other ETRS lenses use 62mm). The 75/2.8 EII is
fine. Avoid the 150/4 MC lens. Any 150/3.5 lens is good: MC, EII and
the PE is superb.

My comments are based on use of the system for the past two years
including virtually all above components I've spoken about; and,
following others comments on the Net.

The ETRSi adds some more modern electronics, a mirror lockup,
and a 'B' shutter speed setting that the earlier models don't have.
With an AE-III prism and a dedicated flash unit, the ETRSi is able
to do TTL/OTF flash control, similar to what many modern high-
dollar 35mm SLRs can do. Long exposure times are a pain to
do with the ETRS - the B feature on the ETRSi would go a long
way toward fixing that problem.

Otherwise they're basically the same camera.

I don't use flash much, but the TTL ability would be great for someone
who does a lot of portraiture, weddings, candid shots, stuff like that.
I really wish my ETRS had the mirror lock on it - someday I may go
ahead and buy an ETRSi body just for that feature.

before buying make sure you have the speeds checked out plus any mirror damage.
This is important with any Bronica ETRS & ETRSi. I have had both and I find
them to be good medium format cameras. A Beattie screen helps a lot with low
light focusing....................best of luck...........jann.

Sorry, already bought the ETRS with same lens and back as yours for
$750.00, but thanks for the offer anyway...

The difference between the ETRS and ETRSi is the the latter allows TTL
Flash photography with an SCA adapter (Note the six-pin receptacle on the
left side of the "i" model) and works great with flash units like the
Quantum "Q"-Flash. Hope this helps.
