I recently purchased a Yashica Mat 124 camera. I'm now looking
for a decent flash to use with the camera. What do I need to
look for? I know I need a flash that uses a PC connection,
not a "hot shoe." Can anyone suggest any good units, new or
used? I want something that will work, it doesn't have to be
fancy. Primary use would be fill-flash.

A Vivitar 283 or 285 works real well. Just make sure you take
a piece of real fine wire and tie down the MX lever to X. It slips. And
to be safe, a piece of black tape on the cold shoe. Some times if you
lose contact with the PC cord, the flash will keep firing, hence the
tape. Bob Hickey

Try a Vivitar 283 or 285. You can get manual sensors that let you
controll the flash output mannually.

A couple accessories that make using a flash with a TLR really nice is
a basic flash bracket and PC-to-hot shoe adapter. You can find both of
these at a local Ritz. The bracket is a simple, folding right-angle
bracket they sell under the Qualide name for about $20. It attaches to
the tripod socket under the camera and has an adjustible cold shoe on
it. The PC-to-hot shoe adapter is simply a six inch or so cord with a
PC plug on one end and a hot shoe on the other. Put this on the
bracket and you won't have to worry about getting a flash with a sync
jack.

As for a flash, something with a variable output is best. Sunpak 383
and Vivitar 285 both fit this bill.

I use a Vivitar 283 with mine.
