Hi,

I'm just moving into large-format photography and I have an opportunity to
buy an old Durst Laborator 1000 enlarger - the photo studio at my workplace
has been shut down and the older equipment will be scrapped or sold.
However, although the enlarger appears to be in good condition, and has a
complete collection of condensers, the negative carrier is missing. I can
find various masks to fit 35mm, 6x6 and 5x4, but nothing to put them in (for
this reason, I can probably get the enlarger for peanuts).

I've tried the UK Durst spares agent, but no luck. A trawl of the Net has
found no carriers on sale, rather a number of postings from other people
also hunting. On the off chance, is there anyone out there with a neg
carrier for sale?

Otherwise, I may try to make my own from MDF or plywood. However, I have no
manual for the enlarger and I don't know exactly where the negative should
sit. Is it safe to assume that it should be half-way in the gap between
condenser and the lens bellows?

If you have a Durst L-1000, perhaps you could have a look at the neg carrier
and give me some advice on constructing a home-made version.

Also, what length lens will I need to print 5x4 negatives? So far I've found
50mm and 80mm Schneider Componons.

Many thanks,

Andy

I can't be of very much help with the negative carrier, but for
printing 5x4 negatives you'll need a 135 or 150mm lens. The 135 will
allow you a slightly larger image size on the baseboard for a given
enlarger head height.

Hi Andy:

Try this URL:

http://www.photomall.com/gecont.htm

He has a whole section on Durst enlargers, including the 1000 - parts,
manuals, etc. Glenn's prices are high but sometimes he is the only one to
have the item - and I have always found his advice to be accurate.

Andy,

I currently use 2 Durst Laborator 1000 enlargers and have extra carriers.
Let me know what you need and I'll see if I have some I can part with.
