I have recently begun photoing with large-format , 9x12, only B/W. An old
outfit from the 1950`s, called Szabad (swedish).
I have rather a lot of experience in B/W-darkroom work with 24x36, and some
with 6x6 too.
But this new format is something different. Started with open trays in total
darkness, no fun.
Found a tank called Combi.Plan with an adjustable rigg inside.
Hope someone can explain to me how to use it.
Am I supposed to have several tanks filled with the different fluids and
move the filmholder between them
Or should I poor out the developer-liquid and fill the tank with stop-bath
with the top lid off (that is :in darkness)?
How is agitation carried out?
As you can see, I am a total newbee in your field, so I would be very
grateful for tips in theese matters!

Dear Bo:

For several years I used the CombiPlan Tank for 4 x 5 processing and grew
to like it as a lights-on processor. You use the capped openings to drain
and fill the tank by way of the funnel included, which fits them. The
tricky part for me was learning to load the film sheets into the 6 slots
so that no surfaces were touching one another. I spent may hours
practicing, eyes closed, with discarded negs and the loading assist tool
which comes with the system. The drawback for me was that there is no way
to be precice about the filling and draining of the tanks so that film is
imersed in developer for a specific time. There is a latitude of about
half a minute either way. For some films this is ok but others are quite
sensitive to precice timing. Agitation is done by sloshing the tank back
and forth and inverting it, so be sure the lid's on tight. It's intended
that you use just one tank and drain and refil it with each stage of
chemistry through the little capped, light-proof openings. Don't take the
lid off until the end of the fixer stage. And if all you have is the tank
and film holder frame without the little funnel and the loading slot
assister, don't bother with the Combi. You need the full compliment of
gear to make it work.

I was taught to use tray development, shuffling negs in the dark, but
seemed always to wind up with a scratch or two. Were I to return to
processing my own negs, I think I would use the dip tank/hanger system
that has been around for a long, long time. But the Combiplan is slick,
once you get the hang of it.

We sent you the instructions but be aware that we write these as a Quark
Xpress file for MAC. If you can't open this get back to me and I will try to
give it to you in an Acrobat file.

No.

We discontinued the 57 version about 10 years ago at which time we destroyed
the molds.

The last 57 tank I saw was at Fishkin Bros in Perth Amboy, NJ.

It is possible that they might still have one for sale.
