I've had a miserable time of late doing _any_ photography. Other than a
couple must-do studio shoots, it looks like my upcoming vacation will be
the limit of my photography opportunities for this summer.

Do you have any specific objectives for this summer?

Cheers,
Alan.

Hell man, it's winter at Tangalooma. Even the tourists are wearing wet
suits! http://www.weprint2canvas.com/gallery/margies/hordsof
Just last night it got down below 10c (50f). I might have to even shut
the windows at night if it gets much colder!

There are likely a lot more photography opportunities around you if you
just look a bit. Have you documented you town, your street and your
house? Have you got good photographs of all your freinds. Are there
any activities that you go to that you don't have photographic records
of? Have you got photographs or your co-workers?

We often don't bother to photograph the common everyday places and
events around us since the seem routine, but a record of these
seemingly mundane places and events are often treasured in years to
come.

In going through my parents old photographs I was shocked at how few
photographs showed the house I grew up in, either on the inside or out.
Of the old used cars they use to drive when we were kids there were no
photos.

I have even photographed the transfer station where we take our trash.
Taking the trash there once a week is part of our life, and whereas the
photo of it has no real value now 20 years from now I am sure I will be
glad I have it.

Yeah, for me staying alive for the summer while I shoot! I got back
home 15 minutes ago from an under water cave diving shoot of three
days. I,m lucky my arse is still here! I spent most of my time focusing
on staying alive and only a little on composition. I invest 96 hours of
my time and walk away with 72 Velvia frames? Shi..., I would hope for
two decent shots. Hope ya all have more photographic productivity for
the summer than I just had. Cheers!

Yes....I wish I had realized that when I was young. there are many things I
wish I had photographed back then. - Don't forget to have other people take
lots of pictures of you with your camera.....I have very few of myself, and
this is what my kids want to see....What I looked like back when I was
younger.

Scott & William,

That is such good advice! I thought I literally had hundreds of pictures
reflecting everyday things from my past...sadly, I guess I THOUGHT about
taking them but didn't (thinking I already had quite a few).

Cliché Millwheel and waterfall pictures, anything picturesque around the
water (Girls :P ).

I may photograph a large, self made beer can pyramid or two.

Also interesting trees, barns etc. Bike shows/car shows, drag racing, and
maybe a bar band or two in black and white.

Come to think of it, that is what I do all year long for the most part.

Fireworks, two or more shows.

Asstd. birds.

Storms, I live on the borders of OKlahoma and Kansas. It's tornado season.

If I can get a macro lens, I'll likely do tons of flowers.
Neosho, Missouri's "Flower Box City", is only ten miles from home.

Nice, slow, lazy, summer!

Yes. I'm heading to Maui and Oahu for a couple of weeks soon, and plan to
hike, bike, beach, and whatever. I think I may take a camera. If I can get
some good stuff during my activities, great. If not, I'll just have a nice
vacation.

Hey Alan,

Yep. If it **ever** stops raining...

* Finishing my move from Kodak to Ilford B&W films. All of my spare photo
time recently has been spent recalibrating my exposure and processing
techniques and times. (That's why the large number of archive photos
recently for the SI -- when I even submit at all.) It will be nice to have
an assured supply again of high-, medium-, AND slow-speed film emulsions.

* Looking into moving up from the miniature 4x5 format to 8x10, or beyond,
depending on finances. Won't get rid of the 4x5. (It was recently
seriously damaged in an accident, but with a little wood- and metal-working
I performed on it I think we're good to go again.) I do like the aspect
ratio of 11x14. But, alas, they don't come with those itty bitty little LCD
preview screens... <g>

* Contact prints. Even if only from the teeny 4x5 negatives. There is a
brand new silver chloride contact paper being birthed as we speak. Intended
as a replacement for Kodak's now discontinued Azo, it's called Lodima
('amidol' spelled backwards). It's one of the increasing number of new
analog products -- films, papers, chemistry and cameras -- now becoming
available as the segmentation of the photographic market finalizes.

* Experimental new developers. I have some ideas for home-brewed film
developers I'd like to try out. To that end I'm about to place a bulk
chemistry order The Photographer's Formulary (another analog market player
who has experienced rapid growth in the last few years due to market
segmentation) for some rather esoteric stuff. Not sure how I feel about the
need to fill out DEA forms to be allowed to purchase some items, but I guess
its just a sign of the times...

Sure.....If he used a mirror, he must have reversed it again in
Photoshop.....With a tripod, he would have been able to get his face in the
picture.....

Hint: For a good smile in a self portrait, hand your camera to a pretty
lady & ask her to take your picture.

I was looking for what other people have as planned objectives.

Sounds adventurous. Not my cuppa. A friend had a similar complaint
after climbing the mountains in Peru he was so O2-deprived that he
couldn't really care about photography. Took a few shots that only
kindly could be called snapshots...

Well for me summer does not have any real meaning so all I can really
speak to is what
objectives I have for the next few months.

We will be going back to Ann Arbor, to visit my home town, and so one
objective is to get a lot of good photos of the places I knew growing
up.

I would like to get a photo of the Lahaina Noon, this is where the sun
is right over head. Somehow I have yet to get a photograph of shadows
going straight down.

And I would like to get a better collection of photographs of the
undeveloped areas around town, they are disappearing fast.

And I want to get better canoe photos, always working on that.

Holy mother of all heavy glass! Some folks were hoping there'd be a .5
coming out, but that Nikon snuck up, and beat 'em all..... How much does
that ƒ.28 weigh. How big is the lens hood? Must be a monster!

If you really enjoy photography and nature, you absolutely do not want
to visit Hawaii without bringing a camera. Honolulu is just like most
other big cities but the wild areas of Hawaii are amazing. If you don't
want to lug around your gear because of your sporting activities, just
bring a weatherproof point and shoot (I'd buy one if you need to ... an
$80 camera and $80 in film is nothing compared to the thousands that a
vacation to Hawaii can cost). The landscapes are so amazing that in many
cases you can take better photos with the limited options of a point and
shoot than you can take with an SLR in the typical "average" area that
many of us live in.

Enjoy your trip.

Is that the new Olympus 300 f/2.8? If so I'm sure you'll get some great
images. That's a lot of focal length for the 4/3 format so you may need
to review the quality of you tripod and head to avoid even the slightest
vibration at shutter time.

With my 300 f/2.8 I've never managed really great widlife photos
although many others are quite good. It takes enormous patience and
location, location, location.

Ha!

Here is such an example:
<http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=Misc/misc-photos/2006-05-10-no-beard>
I don't easily smile for cameras.
