I have a Canon Rebel XS that has preformed flawlessly for the past 5-6 years
until this past week. While taking pictures of our daughter the camera just
stopped, the lens wouldn't focus, the shutter wouldn't snap, and the LCD
displayed "bc". Batts are dead, I thought, but turning the camera off then
on would reset the LCD and the batts indicated they were good (Energizer
e2s). So I swapped the batts for new Duracell Ultras. Now the lens will
focus as normal, the flash will pop, but when I try to release the shutter,
I get the "bc" again. Is the microprocessor toast? Should I send it to a
repair shop? Does anyone know of a good repair shop in the Atlanta area?

I guess I was hoping there was some magical reset sequence that can be
performed to solve this. Any help is appreciated!

I have a Canon EOS 500 (Rebel XS?). On my camera the bc sign comes up if
there is an internal fault. This is in addition to the case when the
battery is low. I have noticed it on a number of occasions. I simply
turn the camera off and then on again and the sign goes away. One
example is when I accidentally held the internal flash down while
pressing the flash release button. The camera became completely
inoperative and the bc sign showed up. I paniced a bit. But I must have
`accidentally' reset the camera and it became normal again.

The meaning of the `bc' sign is stated clearly in the manual. If the bc
sign should reappear after you have reset the camera there could be some
other fault, in which case you should have it checked . . . at least
thats what the manual says.

Hope this helps.

It's been off for a couple of days now, still get the "bc" when I turn it
on. I guess I will find a repair shop and send it in. Sigh......

Thanks for your help.

Maybe "bc" stands for "Buy (a new) Camera"? :) If it is going to cost much
more than $100 to fix, look at getting a new Rebel 2000 body. Of course,
some Best Buy stores still have your exact model for sale, so you could
consider that, too.

I dropped it off at Peach Tree Video and Camera Repair for a free estimate
yesterday. I hope to hear from them Monday and I'll make a decision then.
I like the 2000, so that may be the ticket.

Thanks!

"bc" stands for "battery charge". Seems that your battery is empty !

Nice pics from Portugal. Braga reminds me a lot of my hometown.

By the way, the calibration pictures are not loading. Broken links, it
seems.

I installed new Duracell Ultras. The repair shop has the camera now, will
find out tomorrow what the damage is.

Daniel,

Greg had already said he replaced the batteries, and it was pointed out that
the same signal would display in the case of an internal malfunction. In
addition, the ":)" in my message implies that I meant the comment to be
taken humorously, not seriously. Now, who's battery is empty??? ;-) (note
another indication of humor...)

$165 for a new film motor. Letmesee, a new Canon Rebel 2000 with DOF
preview and other cool stuff for $219 from Beach Camera or repair this 5-6
year old camera. That didn't take long to think about..

Anyone know where I can find parts cameras or new parts? I might try to
replace it myself.

Seriously, though, did you get any takers on your new motor request?

None. I worked on getting the motor out of the XS for a couple of hours and
I still don't have it out. The camera is probably a write-off at this
point. There's about a million and one parts in a camera, all surrounding
the film motor.

Got my new Rebel 2K from www.beachcamera.com last Friday. Has some cool
features that the XS didn't have and it's cheap! Had to buy another set of
new batts though, this one takes CR2 and the XS uses CR123. $13 bucks down
the drain....

I need to shop for a flash now. Any recommendations?

Well, since the Rebel 2k is e-TTL and high-speed sync compatible, one of
Canon's EX series would probably be the best choice. Beyond that, its up to
your budget.
