Here in New Zealand, most bakeries are run by Cambodians or Vietnamese.
Corner shops by Indians, computer shops by Chinese. So we avoid all these
shops because they're run by a ethnic, minority groupings? Majority of
digital cameras are Japanese. Obviously something to get paranoid about that
bunch. Must avoid, in the future!

I've bought 2 digital cameras from B&H as they are one of the few stores
that will accept overseas credit cards. I've had no problems with them, but
there again, I never knew (or cared) that they were Jewish.

Two points:

My first job back in 1965 I worked for two Jewish brothers-in-law in a factory
and we had Black, Hispanic and Christain folks there, but when Friday sundown
came they were closed.

Back in the 1970s many of the stores like 47th St Photo, Executive Photo etc
were and in some cases STILL are owned and run by whole familes, cousins,
brothers, uncles etc, etc

I can see how that would attract Jewish job applicants. But did B&H
observe Jewish holidays from the beginning, or did it begin to do so
after building up a large proportion of Jewish employees?

The owners are orthodox, from what I understand. No camera store
owner would ever close a store on Saturday (the busiest retail day of
the week) except out of obligation (such as religious stricture) no
matter what the employees wanted. They also would not shut down the
whole business for weeks at a time twice a year. They do leave the
web site operating, but I can't help but wonder what happens if it
crashes during the holiday closure.

all...ever.

B&H doesn't have to operate a store at all, period.

The owners don't have to operate anything, anywhere.

So just be glad they're there (B&H), generally doing a terrific job, and

business operates, shop at the second best, the third best or the worst.

I don't know who you are, but all the people I know with your name
pronounce it as if it was "Genteelay." They are like me. Guineas,
Wops, Dagos, Greaseballs, in other words, scum. But from my illiterate
immigrant Ginzo grandfather I learned there is nothing more stupid

For the specifics, I have dealt with B&H, you know, those weirdos with
the funny clothes and hats ( my grandad's brother's gold earing was
also a bit of a stretch) for 25 years or so. My only complaint is that
thay have treated people like me so well that their business has grown
to the point where the guys that answer the phone are less likely to
be knowledgable about the products they have to look up in the
catalog.

How do you know they are all Jewish?

I have bought from B&H and Adorama and will do so in the future. They are
reasonably cheap (much cheaper than at home in Europe), offer good service
and ship abroad without much problems.

Why should I care what they believe in? Do you always check out people's
faith or non-faith before buying with them? Why is religion such a big deal
for some people?

Going to B&H (and maybe the NYC jewelry district too) is about the only
place on earth (apart from Israel) where you are able to listen to people
speaking Yiddish, and if you are German like me you even understand 90% of
them!

Before there was B&H (or at least my awareness of it, about 1990)
there was a similar hign-end camera store called 47Th St Photo, on
..... 47th st. I first shopped there in the late 60's. It was
cramped, and on the christian shopping holidays it was packed elbow to
elbow, like the subway, and it could take hours to get to a counter
salesman, and then to checkout. By comparison B&H, at it's busiest,
is like a fast food joint.

47th was owned and staffed with orthadox jews, and had the same
reputation as B&H has now (at least as far as I knew). The location
was smack in the middle of the NYC diamond district, which is a single
block in Manhattan, which everyone probably knows is essentially an
all-jewish business.

At some point in the late 80's the 47th St owner ran into tax problems
and the place folded. As I understand it his problems were personal,
there was never any claim by anyone that he gyped customers or
employees. We were sorry to see it go. I've always wondered that B&H
was started by ex-47th employees.

The diamond district played some roll in two movies; Marathon Man
(1976) starring Dustin Hoffman, (a nazi-hunting story) and Snatch
(2000) (very funn diamind heist flick). Rent them and you'll see
47th st and people that look like the people that work at 47th/BH.

To this day there are rip-off camera stores in manhattan with
names and signs that intend to look like 47th Photo.

I'm a fan of B&H.

Well, I can't really say that I think that this crazy thread is part of a
bigger plan to attack Jews, but I could certainly be wrong.

What I find troubling is how quickly some people have jumped on the
bandwagon and have expressed obnoxious sentiments against your people. It
would have been different if, perhaps, your people had a history of
oppressing others, as did the Nazis. But what crime have you (I'm speaking
collectively) comitted to warrant all that continuing hatred?

I thought it was pretty evident given the state of the world as it is. There
is just so much one can blame one nation for. When one looks at the entire
world landscape from ecological to political to personal one gets the notion
that we're in a state of mass chaos. There is a war going on all fronts - on
the battlefields of Iraq and within the hearts of mankind.

How the Jews fit into this? We are the Lights unto the Nations. When we
begin to fill our roles with presence of mind, spirit and body - doing what
we are destined to do - TEACH the world Torah - the spiritual malaise that
has got the world in its grip will cease forever.

What we are witnessing here and *out there* are symptoms of severe spiritual
illness. Nothing more. Nothing less.

appeared to be for the store that I knew. I'm sorry to hear that they're
merely pretenders.

As for the list of films about the Diamond District, there's a movie with
Meg Ryan, the name of which escapes me at the moment, in which she plays a
detective who goes undercover among the Brooklyn Hassidim to investigate a
Diamond District murder.

Thats Melanie Griffin as the cop in "A Stanger Among Us" good film. Sean
Connery's daughter-in-law Mia Sara is also in the film.

Not when you have to lose pay like I did.

This brings up another point, in my photo studio if I'm open on Friday nights
and Saturday Daytime those are the hours for which I hire a person, right?
NOW! If a sabbath observer applys for a job and I don't hire him/her based on
said points can I still be sued?

I knew 47th Street Photo very well and did business there with few problems,
(remember the little old man who was the only one to run the cash register?)
sorry to say I can't say the same about FOCUS PHOTO here in Brooklyn with their
attitude problems.
47th is missed.

Another pretty good film to highlight the diamond district is "A Stanger Among
Us"
The police station is in my old neighborhood of Williamsburg for the New
Yorkers on this NG the EL you see is the northern part of the "M" line
Knickbocker Ave station.

I for the most part don't, I just don't care for the way some people have to
wear their fath (In a matter of speaking) on their shoulders. I tell you one
thing if I walk into a shop and see Muslims running the place I walk right out.

Certainly gives new meaning to the word "doctoral" ... as in "doctoring"
history.

About 8 years ago, after my undergraduate studies, I went on a backpacking
trip in Europe. The itinerary included a visit to Auschwitz. Behind large
glass displays I saw bales of human hair, meant for weaving into haircloth,
and piles of empty cans once filled with a cyanide compound. I also saw
incinerators for human bodies and shower rooms outfitted as gas chambers.
These are images not easily forgotten.

If anyone can deny that the Holocaust happened, they can live in their own
shell and dream up their own fantasy world. But then the baseness of
race/religious hatred has always had the power to completely shut out the
loftier human qualities of reason and compassion. Sad isn't it?

Slowly there are people from all of the nations who are waking up to
themselves and to their hearts saying to themselves that *things don't quite
compute* any longer. So, while the world is busy trying to find logic in
things, the Jews must tell you that there is no logic, no reasons which can
be quantified. There is Hashem's will that the world exists, it is Hashem's
will that we learn through the path of suffering. It is Hashem's will that
we get to the level of Understanding so that this Wisdom be incorporated
into life itself - so that the suffering be turned into blessing - darkness
into Light.

No, I would think thats more of a Greco Roman type thing.
Down through history peoples have co-mingled so for me
I avoid that type of sterotype. Its always interesting talking
with newly introduced Jewish friends, that its almost always assumed
that I am Jewish because of my name. But I am not,....my loss
I guess,..... I love kanishes? and of coarse lox spread in cream cheese.

The Mission Statement - GDC Preamble

The aims of this organization shall be to provide defense and relief to
members of the working class who are being persecuted for their activity
in the class struggle.

Coordinating our efforts will enable the General Defense Committee to
oppose the vicious onslaught of the master class with a powerful defense,
especially when labor is engaged in industrial strife.

It has been found in past labor struggles that the lack of adequate
defense has resulted in many of the most active fighters for labor being
arrested and imprisoned for long periods of time or being legally murdered
by the employing class.

It shall be the purpose of the General Defense Committee to aid those who
find themselves persecuted by the powers that be in their struggle for
justice and freedom.

It shall also be the purpose of the General Defense Committee to publish
and distribute literature exposing the false and reactionary propaganda of
the master class.

By organizing the many and centralizing their efforts in each instance,
labor will be given the protection of the entire working class, thereby
making an injury to one the concern of all.

Goals of the General Defense Committee

The GDC of the IWW wants most to provide support to any member of the
working class who finds themselves in legal trouble due to their
involvement in the class war.

Any member of the IWW or GDC in good standing may petition the GDC for
direct aid in their legal defense on charges resulting from protests,
picketing, or other acts related to job action or activist causes. This
aid may include bail, bond, or legal aid, and may take the form of a grant
or a no interest loan. Members may also rest assured of solidarity from
the organization, including motions of support, letters writing, and
public education as to the case (or cases) in question.

Non-members of the IWW or GDC who find themselves embattled with the law
may also expect solidarity from the organization, including motions of
support, letters writing, and public education as to the case (or cases)
