Even though I lost the D300 I had a redundant backup system, so I have
been able to salvage most of the shots from my African trip.
It is good to be home. The return trip via Amsterdam, with bad European
and East coast weather was a nightmare. Each leg of the return was met
with a delay. I had a 39 hour day from Cape Town to SFO.

African Wild dogs, fast moving, well camouflaged, and tough to shoot.
http://homepage.mac.com/lco/Sites/Wilddogs-2009-H2/index.html

More cheetah,
http://homepage.mac.com/lco/Sites/Cheetah-2009-H1/index.html

and Southern Masked Weaver, totally engaged in nest building.
http://homepage.mac.com/lco/Sites/Weaver/index.html

Just a taste from a travelling amateur. I will be replacing the stolen
D300 with a D300s.

And why the fuck are you cross-posting over 3 newsgroups you clueless
attention seeking tosspot. Are you sure you haven't missed out a few like
weather, wild animals, and tourism? Cross-posting fucks up newsgroup
hierarchies and magnifies assholes like the P&S troll.

The P&S troll lurks in these groups and will make his presence known

Thank you for sharing. You have many nice memories of your trip. I think you
made a good choice in a new camera.
Now tell the truth, was the D300 really stolen, or is that what you told
your wife?<G>

It's too high level to really justify being cross-posted. Just because it
mentions a particular thing doesn't make it appropriate. It's just a fact
that cross-posting like this fucks up newsgroup hierarchies and magnifies
trolling. This can and has destroyed newsgroups in the past.

Don't alter my follow-ups without a good reason, and doing it without
notification is against convention and rude. You're going to do whatever you
want regardless so before we get into that ego game I'll point out this
isn't an issue of netcopping but self-discovery.

I could've wanred you before you went to Joberg but didn't as, I reckoned,
you'd bitch and some of the other guys would accuse me of being a killjoy.
You got your stuff stolen. Hey, ho. There's a similar cause and effect cycle
with newsgroup posting *and* photography.

If you're right, you're wrong. Certainty is an illusion.

fuck I hate net cops, all puffed up on their own self importance.
I find the best solution is to just bin them and that way, even if they do
remove various groups from the headers it doesn't matter, because you never
see their infantile ramblings about some long dead conventions.
And it is even more odious when they complain about posts that generally fit
the bill of all the groups posted.

Well it worked.
I lost the 16GB CF.
...but I made a daily backup to my Colorspace UDMA, an outboard FW800
HD, and a Lightroom conversion to DNG on my laptop. So that was a
triple redundant backup.

Heading off to Columbia for a couple weeks in Jan. I'm looking at an
offload option. I'll be carrying 24 (16+8) GB in cards, but shooting raw.

A 160GB netbook ($299) is my first option. Even sell it on C'list on
return. I've tried finding something used as well, but either
over-spec/priced or old junk with 40 GB disks...

A simple data sucker that would automatically copy the CF to a HD would
be okay, except that I might want to edit and e-mail out some photos
while there. A netbook capable of running Elements 3.0 would be fine
enough for that.

I'd guess I'll be shooting about 4 - 8 GB per day, on average. (100 -
200 images). This will reduce to 2-4 GB/day if I do a lossless
compression DNG conversion on the laptop.

Funnily enough, Colombia is an example I had lined up in a draft post
up-thread but later dumped. Things may have cleared up in Columbia by now
but corruption, gangsterism at various levels, and paranoia were a noxious
mix you stumble blindly into. I'll skip that but leaving a copy of
documentation and money with a trusted third party before you go may be
useful. It could be useful getting back home in one piece.

Well the one thing all of us can be sure of, is your ability to match
the P&S troll as an offensive presence and intrusion on any post which
disturbs you in some way.

In his case "the usual rambling shit" is his P&S diatribe, in yours it
is injecting yourself ito a thread you claim you have no interest in,
and bitching.
Posing as News Group cop and final judge of what should or should not
be posted is not a hat you wear well.

Oh, do calm down. I've made the points I wanted to and trimmed follow-ups
accordingly. I've got no particular interest in this topic nor follow the

branch in one newsgroup. Stop winding your internet ego up and let it go.

I'm not making any claims about my photography or spraying crap over every
topic. I don't even post in the photo groups outside of alt.photography and
I've never exchanged words with you. If some people want to wave their dicks

I understand that. But, it seems to me that there is some mechanism for
adjusting the fps on the video This mechanism would not be free. There is
also a high probability that the additional cost may absorbed by savings in
not having an additional line.

There might be a small cost savings, but then the lack of this feature

I think the real benefit of the D300s upgrade is stuff such as the dual
SD/CF slots and the programing potential for that feature. JPEGs of one
NEF on another, eg. B&W jpg on one and 12 or 14 bit NEF on the other.
Overflow to the extra card when the primary is full, dual recording,
TIFF to one and whatever to the other, or one for stills and one for
video.
Also the high frame rate is available without the addition of the
MB-D10, and LV, for those who use it is now accessed via a dedicated
button.

I know it's a great box, but I will wait for the D400

Savageduck,

Would you please not post to rec.photo.digital.slr-systems if you are
not going to reply to comments made there?

Thanks,
David

David,

I am sorry if I had not responded directly to you in the threads I
initiated. I have been trying to ignore the various tangents both OPs
regarding the theft of my D300 had taken, and saw no need to continue
to defend my initial intent to the insufferable Charles. My OP's NG
appropriate X-posts had been so butchered, and the original discussion
changed it seemed best just to monitor the threads.

I have been dealing with my insurance and even though I don't
particularly need the video feature my choice for a replacement will be
a D300s and a new 18-200mm VRII.

All the best for the New Year.

Well, yes & no. I was suggesting that you compare prices of the 300 and the
300s using eBay......You can also use the big stores that sell both used and
new equipment.....
