hello,
A friend of mine who is a professional photographer just gave me(he got
a new system) a NikonF3 with MD4motor drive, underwater housing,a 28mm,50mm,
85mm, 180mm, and 300mm Nikon lenses with low Fstops and I was wondering if
it is worth anything. The body is not dented, but is very worn from fingers.
I had a local shop look at it and they told me that it works perfectly with
the exception of the speed being off at very high speeds. This is a cool
camera and takes great photos, but it is more than I need. I am not a
photographer and would like to sell it and get my wife something nice with
the proceeds. Does anyone out there know if this Camera is worth selling?
Thanking you in advance.

Yes, it has value. Check www.ebay.com.

Nah, it's junk. Send it to me so you don't have to dispose of it.

Seriously, this is a troll, right? Is this how you get you jollies? If not, do
you homework. Get a copy of Shutterbug magazine and check prices on similar
used equipment or go to ebay and check completed auctions.

If it hasn't been seriously abused, it should still be worth several
hundred dollars with motor. The 28 and 50mm lenses are probably in the
50-200 dollar range each, depending on type and condition. The 85, 180,
and 300mm lenses might be worth much more depending on which particular
lens they are (a 300mm f/2.8 AIS, for example, could be in the thousands,
if it's in good shape). A 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS is around $300 in bargain
condition (i.e. some scratches and chips, but mostly clean glass). I have
no idea what the underwater housing is worth.

Definitely check prices on Ebay and consider selling through them. Also
check KEH.com, who will buy your equipment, but you'll definitely get less
money there than with Ebay. I've had great results selling old gear
there. The important thing is to be honest about its condition and
provide photos of the equipment.

Good luck,

Paul

Are you kidding me?

You have over $1,000 in used gear considering the lenses are in at least
good condition. You have a great friend for him just to give you that stuff.
Something smells fishy here.

F3 HP is one of Nikons best camera's and hold their value verry well. In
excellent and like new conditions they sell for almost the new price. Only
problem is that this is a very select market. I have (2) F3 HP's, I've been
trying to sell one (E++) for 2 months now. If the right person comes a long
they would buy it in a heart beat! It only took 3 days to sell my N90s!
Most people want auto everything and auto focus. So finding a interested
buyer is the only factor. If you sell this camera, sell it on your own as
camera stores won't give you much for it ($200-$300), and they'll turn
around and try to sell it for $800! The lenses take even longer to sell no
matter how good they are for the same reasons.

Worthless junk.
Put it in the recycling bin.
Maybe it can be melted down and made into something of value, a Leica
perhaps...

I suppose you forget to mention it's an F3T or F3P model perhaps...?
Does the "wear from fingers" extend THROUGH the shutter curtains?
:-)
Thanks for a good troll!

Hey guys,
I swear this is not a troll. This was just a fair trade I made with a
friend who is a professional photographer for some really good Scuba gear
that I had. His company bought him tens of thousands of dollars worth of new
photo equipment, and my company got me all new top of the line scuba gear.
Neither piece was doing either one of us any good collecting dust so we just
traded toys like kids do. I really like the camera, but I just don't have
the time to take up yet another hobby.
I figured where else can I at least get some opinion on whether or not I
am holding something valuable but here. My big hobby is that I am a student
pilot and very active on that NG and know how many tricks that I have
learned from other pilots and thought that someone here may be just as
useful. I could look at e-bay until I am blue in the face, but there I
cannot ask them what exactly that I am holding. I humbly apologize if
someone thought I was trolling because I usually hate those guys (unless
it's really funny).

The camera gear you have cannot be valued unless you know the
condition of each item.

(...sort of like a 1948 Piper Cub in a hanger has a different
value than one stored in the corn crib.)

If you take time to visit a couple of your local camera shops,
browse what they are asking for lens and/or the F3 body in the
same condition. You will likely get 70 to 80 percent of their
price if you wait for the right buyer to find your posting,
if you sell it on the Net.

Good luck....

come on, you didn't tell him about the Nikon Disposal Fee(tm); (they
passed some kind of regulation a few yrs back and now it costs you
money to properly dispose of old cameras, especially the nikons).

I'll waive the fee if you mail it to me this week. email me for details.

good advice; provide DETAILED photos and explain the exact condition
as best as possible. maybe ask a photostore to describe it and write
down what they say (if you're new to cameras). doing all this upfront
will ease the ebay process and the new buyer will be getting exactly
what he expects, with no hurt feelings on either side.

OK, I'll take your word.

What you have there IS valuable, and you should NOT sell it before you
actually tried it out! This is GREAT equipment, dammit. If it was a
Leica (great equipment also, but extension costs are just to high AND
I don't like having $xxxxx on me while travelling!), I'd sell it to
get some Nikon or Minolta gear (so written so meant), but an F3 is
something almost everybody in this NG either would like to have or or
has and keeps.

IF you want to sell it, trade it for other photo equipment that suits
you, or else you are insulting your friend. period.

Anybody here telling you it's worthless belongs into one of those
categories:

-Benevolent Joker
-Troll
-Leica or Canon redneck (of course there are none in this NG)
-Somebody who wants to rip you off (!!!!)
-Somebody who never had an SLR, as everybody who has or had knows,
(though not everybody (including me) had an F3), what an F3 is about
and that it is valuable pro class gear even today.
-Somebody who is a high-tech freak who thinks everything that doesn't
have 10 gigs of Harddrive, 4 LCD displays, 45 terribly small knobs,
internet access, and needs 17 batteries, is bullshit.

Take a photography course. Then decide if you still want to sell it. This is the
one hell of a camera with a nice collection of lenses. It has a timeless
quality, the F3 is still in production after 20 years, making it perhaps the
most successful design in modern photography. Think twice before selling.

If you sell it, you probably will never be able to get anything as good as
what you have. At least not without putting thousands of additional dollars
into the system. The advice to take a photography course and start using it
would be the best advice that anybody could give you. You have a system
that will last you for the rest of your life. I would have a good tech do a
CLA (clean, lube, and adjust) on the body.

Happy shooting,
Woodard

Thanks for the advise. What the heck. I'll try it and see how much I get
into it. If it is too much for me then I'll sell it. Judging by what you
guys have said why not give it a trial test to see if it makes any
difference. I'll get back to you in a few weeks.

Danny

PS-maybe your right in that it may insult a friend to sell it without trying
it.

<G>

Sure it's worth selling. It is a pro camera used by 80% of Nikon pros before
the autofocus cameras came out.

To get a feel for prices of used equipment, check the ads in Shutterbug
magazine.

Then sell it or trade it in on something you would rather have.
