I thought Exakta was dead long time ago, but now I see this item on
Ebay which seems new or at least not as old as 40-50 years. the
picture and dimentions suggest this lens to be very compact. Does
anybody know or better used this lens? I am not looking for the best
quality lens as I know that will kost much, much more than this but i
do not want a pice of junk either. I am looking for a long tele with
acceptable results. Shall I go for it?
Btw. Does this lens only have one apperture(F.8)? Is it something
wrong or what with this lens?

Thanks for your time,

M. Talaian

Exakta is one of the brands now owned by Pentacon GmbH of Dresden. They
use (or rather abuse) it for marketing a selection of particularly cheap
and cheerful trash from South-East Asia.

You may check their offerings at their website:

Depends on what you call acceptable. Be warned though, it is quite
shabby.

Find a Meyer (or Pentacon) 500 mm Orestegor and you'll be fine. They
usually go for about 250 to 300 Euro, on ebay.de.

Nothing exceptional about this. It's a catadioptric (mirror) lens and as
a such doesn't have a diaphragm.

Cheers,
Ralf

In article <rb6n3ucgbpekq225k...@4ax.com>,
mojt...@donot.start.no says...
It's a generic Cat lens...don't waste your money. It uses a T-mount for
what ever camera you wish to use it on. A few years ago I tried one, a
Vivitar (not the famous solid cat), then I tried a high quality model
(in this case an Olympus Mirror lens 500mm). The difference was night
and day. I bought the Olympus, and have loved using it ever since.
Cats are fixed aperture, 500mm are f.8, 1000mm f.11. You must use ND
filters to adjust your EL. This is one case where you get what you pay
for. <IMHO>

Geez, how the (semi) mighty have fallen. I have
3 Exacta bodies, all produced in the early 50s,
their creators must be really proud! Not...

Don't buy a mirror lens. Everything which is out of focus looks
terrible and what you have focused on lacks the ultra sharpness,
color and contrast.
Buy a 400/5.6 instead with glass elements only.
I don't know which lens mount you have but Nikon makes a MF
400/5.6 IFED which you can get cheap 2nd hand. You will get better
results with this lens.
