Seems like Mystic Color Labs is closing its doors in January and
closing forever in July.

I feel sorry for the employees but this may be the reason:

"The work force includes 11 officials and managers, four
professionals, 11 technicians, two sales/store clerks, 26 office and
clerical workers, 10 skilled craft workers, 55 semi-skilled workers
and three service workers."

real workers = 81, management = 41,
1 management per 2 employees

What kind of math is that? My Irish math shows

11 managers and 108 non-management a 1:10 ratio which is low. Most
authorities recommend about 1:5 for typical jobs and 1:3 for stress jobs
like combat.

I am not a fan of a Mystic Labs...
But I too feel for the employees... Being let go is never a pleasant
experience and lab techs perform what has to be one of the most thankless
jobs in the photo retail world. At the Camera Store I work in on a personal
level I can't stand most of the lab techs (personality clashes is the only
reason), but on a professional level I hold them in the highest regard.

with such authorities you need not wonder why few publicly traded
companies offer dividends

let me get this straight ... you're defending corporate fat? only
possible from a middle manager

Re: Mystic Photo Closing

As a member of the photographic industry and the owner of a major
direct-mail photo lab I feel very badly about Mystic Color closing. My
lab (Dale Laboratories) and Mystic have had a fine, cooperative
relationship for many years. The closing of a lab that has been in
business for over thirty years will cause a major disruption to the
lives of over 100 employees, many of whom have been veterans at
Mystic.

There may also be some unwanted "surprises" for many Mystic customers
who will have no idea that their film is no longer being processed by
the same competent staff who were attuned to the needs of advanced
amateur photographers. The change...as we understand it from industry
press releases...in terms of ordering, for those customers will be
transparent. They will use the same mailers addressed to the same
Mystic P.O. box in Connecticut. What will be missing is processing and
handling by the same group of technicians. Customers film will be
transported elsewhere for processing, presumably a consumer-level
rather than a professionally-oriented laboratory (the name of the lab
hasn't been publicized).

The current Mystic lab and its personnel will be operating until the
beginning of January. Film sent after that date will be transferred to
the other operation.

As it stands, we at Dale Laboratories are the only direct mail lab
left who specialize in serving the professional/advanced-amateur
market. Though this might seem a windfall for us, I take no joy in
Mystic's demise. A lot of fine people have been hurt through no fault
of their own (the effects of 9/11, digital photography, etc.) We shall
certainly miss the important part they played in the film processing
market.

For those customers who are not satisfied with the new service...or
who want special services not available in retail stores...we will be
happy to fill the void. They may reach us for information at
www.dalelabs.com.

I hope this information is useful to you and that you will advise your
friends.

this would imply a sample size above nyquist and at least a 50%
correlation, care to share those statistics? until then the notion of
1:3 or even 1:5 administration to worker flies in the face of
moderatism, and if it doesn't result in micro-management what can it
result in

Those courses (and Army experiences) were 30 years ago. I no longer
have the books or the references. However let me assure you, the
information was backed by good math. I was an economics/math major. Since
that time I have been employed successfully using that information.

I notice you use the term administration and I have used the term
management. While they both mean much the same, in common usage they don't
mean exactly the same thing. Often in business administrative duties
include a lot of non-management duties such as payroll, accounting
secretarial work etc. I do not include this activities in management. They
support management however.

Maybe we are not as far apart as it might seem.

Dale Labs seems to be one of the few major direct-mail photo labs that
processes120 film (anymore). Mystic doesn't. But I noticed on the
dalelabs.com website that only prices for processing 120 print film are
listed; no pricing or availability for E-6 films. Did I miss something?

I think he's telling you that your math is wonky - which is quite
different from corporate fat.

Dale Labs specializes in "both slides & prints from print films".

I believe they do E6, but that's not what they're famous for.

A&I does E6/C41/B&W in 120/220 & 135 sizes. :) They're my favorites. I
buy the mailers from B&H.

As a customer of Mystic for the last 12 years, I am very dismayed(shocked
actually) about the news they are closing. During that time I have probably
had 500+ rolls of film processed by them. While I always considered the
quality of the prints to be good(but not necessarily great), I especially
liked that fact that every roll, print, and negative had a unique
identifier. This made it easy for me to organize my prints and negatives
and was one of the main reasons I used them. I'll now have to start
searching for alternative labs.

I am a little bit concerned that you use this occasion to promote
own business with the slogan "the only direct mail lab specializing
in pro/advanced amateur services." And what about A&I or the Calypso
in Santa Clara, CA, to name only the two known to me.

Are the tears after the Mystic employees only crocodile tears?

Thomas.

Photoworks.com has been good to my film and have a good system for
identifiying + tracking film. (I don't work for them and don't own their
stock)
