they are not more than a Pawn shop that happens
to sell new/used Cameras..

about 5 years ago, i bought a Tamron sp60-300mm lens(minolta mount) at a price of $400.00 cdn.
today, i know that i have been had because i was naive and less informed on camera equipment than
today..

the tamron lens is actually a pain in the ass because it's big and heavy and doesn't have
a tripod collar.. plus the big ring for focusing-zooming makes it more a challenge
to make a good shot... and since the X-700 body i was using was so small, it was
very hard to hold and take good pictures with that setup..

i was told that the lens had been checked and approved in being in
perfect shape.... from the outside of it, it looked great..but i never
got good shots from it.. it was actually deceving...

3 months later, i decided to change from my Minolta setup
to a Nikon setup.. and brought the lens at Ginn photo's in Ottawa,canada..
the clerk inspected the lens and told me that it was not worthmuch
.. i thought huh??

why, because the lens had tons of fungus in it and there was so much that it
was damaging the rims of the lenses... while putting a light through, you could see that
the lens was filthy .. and this didn't happend in 3 months time.. this clerk is a man past his
50's and very experienced in photography and equipment...

i sold the lens at a local pawn shop for $40 (math..10% of what i paid for it )..
and today, that lens is still at the same pawn shop in the window.. for $60.00
i got rid of it because i was frustrated and felt i had been had.. besides,
the 1 month return period for used equipment Simon's offer to their clients was passed..

i did send them emails to which i got no response.. and when i told the clerk about the lens
thing about a year after, he told me he doensn't remember..(he probably doesn't give a shit..)

of course, i should have been more patient and brought back the lens right after the person
at Ginn photo (great place, if you live in the ottawa, canada area) showed me how bad it was
..but i realised that Simon's LIED to me..the lens was supposed to be in perfect shape..

sometimes, i call them just to see what the value is on some items..(hey, i figure that
they screwed me, therefore, the could at least give me some service like used
camera prices.. )..

oh..i go there sometimes to laugh at the prices they put on their used cameras... but i
will NEVER buy anything there for as long as i live...

SImon's cameras,
st antoine street
montreal, canada

SUCKS!!

Georgio,

I am surprised at your diatribe. I have dealt with Simons for over 20 years and never
had anything but excellent service. As for the Tamron lens, it is one of my better
xx-300 lenses and surely you must have noticed the weight and lack of tripod collar
when you checked it out and bought it!

I've never been to Simon's but many friends are customers and they are
satisfied...I've never heard a bad word about them. I suppose you
could go to Lozeau's and pay even more?

You are talking about a Tamron 5:1 zoom ratio lens. Give us a break.
If you couldn't figure out it was a pain in the ass when you bought it,
that isn't Simon's fault it is yours. That CAD$400 price would have
been about right for that lens at that time (used, good cond. no fungus).

No idea about the fungus story ... but when buying a used lens it is
among the many things you _must_ check for. Caveat Emptor. Simon's
should have pointed this out if they knew about it. That is certain.
That you didn't see the fungus when you bought the lens implies that
your are blind if it is as bad you say a mere 3 months later.

Why you bring this up 5 years after the fact seems suspicious to me. Is
it really that you decided about 4 years and 9 months after storing the
lens in your humid basement to "go Nikon" and that is the cause of the
fungus in your Tamron?

I went to their store 2 or three times, but never buy something with them.
It seems that they don't have good custumer service. I have a freind
who have bought a kit hasseblad around 20K, at begining he did with
Simons but at the final point there was something that they can not provide
a good service for him and my friend bought with another store.

I have seen a Canon Lens 28-105 on Simons website, when I went there
they charge me 20$ more (they said the price when you buy directly is higher
than by Web). So I didn't buy anything with them and I think I never come
back
again, I can not trust these guys there. I always buy with Lozeau, the price
perhaps a litle higher (not in the case of Canon 28-105, Simons price
on theire webpage is 20$ less, in the store it's same at Lozeau), I have
very good service at Lozeau.

I was surprised when I saw good comments about Simons, perhaps it depends
with who you talk with. But for me never I buy with them, I will
go with Lozeau (my next purchare is a Elan 7E :-)

Any reason why you are posting a negative (and possibly defamatory) thread
for something that was purchased 5 years ago?

Also, did you go back at any time with the "defective" item and ask for a
refund or exchange? They have been in business for over 70 years, catering
to pros and amateurs. I sincerely doubt that they would have been able to
remain in business for so long if their service was so poor, just as I
sincerely doubt that they would have risked ruining their reputation over 1
item.

I have personally been a customer of Simon's Cameras for over 20 years and I
have had nothing but great service and good prices.

Instead of Lozeau, try Laplante in Laval or Auteuil in Laval. The price
drops in direct proportion to your distance from Lozeau's!
I have nothing against Lozeau's; they do have more in store than anyone
in Montreal (that I know of), but they are more pricey than anyone else too.

Cheers,
Alan

Huum..., I have just tried to call Laplante to get the price of Canon
Elan7e: 629.95$
but not in stock. At Lozeau it is 619.99$ . On the website of Simons it is
599.95$ but they will charge at least 20$ more if buying in the store.
So for whom living in Montreal, it's better go with Lozeau, more choice,
and good customer service.

If you're so concerned about saving a buck, buy the !&^@%!&@ thing from Simon's
Web site, pay the $7.95 shipping, save yourself the trip to the store, and then
shut up about it. Enough already.

I always by at Simon's. I don't know about this "$20 more" thing.
It hasn't happened to me. Also I've occasionally emailed for a price
and been told accurately.

I'm not concerned about saving a buck to serve your whole familly the
bullshit as the breakfirst.
I'm telling the truth that I see. If you don't want to know, don't read it,

Normally I'd just ignore that, but it's kinda funny, given that I'm sitting
here wearing a "Big Dog" T-shirt. If you're gonna call me names, at least get
'em right, sonny :)

P.S. Exactly what does that first sentence mean, anyway? I don't get it.

As said in my previous post, perhaps it depends with who you talk with.
That time, I have printed out their price list from the web and brought to
their store,
then when I showed it to the guy there, he tried to say that price does not
match the price selling in the store , etc. I have talked with 2 other guys
in
2 other visits, they know very well the stuffs, but they don't seem good in
customer service.
After these experiences, I have asked several peoples who have dealed with
them,
no one gives good comment about customer service, especially the
professional guy that
bought the Hasselblad kit around 20K.

I just post things that happen to me and to my friend, if you have good
service
from them, that's good for you. But we have right to post our own opinion on
this
forum right ? But there is a stupid guy "Doug Payne" who has choc when
reading
bad comments about one or other merchant. Probably his father is working in
their store as cleaner and he doesn't want lost the job if the store has to
be closed.

Good luck

Both are on Blvd. des Laurentide.
One nearer Montreal (a km or so past the bridge), the other quite a bit
further on. Check Canada 411 ... I'm not your valet or secretary.

My past experience dealing with Lozeau and Laplante: These were the
prices at the time in Cad$.

Maxxum 9: Lozeau: CAD$2299 Laplante: CAD$2100.

Dimage Scan Dual: Lozeau $700, Laplante: $670, bought at $620.

20 mm f/2.8: Lozeau: $820 ; Laplante: $800 ; Auteuil: $780

HS5600: Laplante was about $20 more than auteuil, Lozeau was
another $10 or so above that.

Other expensive lenses I bought in the US (1 used, 2 new) and saved a
collective $1000 or more doing so...

Just happened on this thread but am amazed at the blame being put on the customer!! OK he didn't check for fungus (his main complaint I think), and he sold it only 3 months later, so it's doubtful fungus became that serious in only 3 months time, but regardless -- that doesn't make Simon's worthy of any praise. I have dealt with them for 40 years and never buy from them (for the past twenty) because of their policy regarding used equipment which was to never show the price on the price tag in the store and to use incredibly arcane codes to conceal that information, plus they were very difficult with returns when a problem was discovered shortly after purchase. Never liked the customer service either. But that was my experience 7 - 27 years prior to this post. Maybe they have improved, but I never return to find out.
