I was given an old Nikon camara which came with this
item. It's some sort of spotter / camera mount thingie
You can see it here at
http://www.listbot.8k.com/teleoptics/teleops.htm

It came with a tele-optics 1 1/4" 18mm Kellner eyepiece
and the main spotter thing seems to be a Nikon mount
as a Nikon lens will attach perfectly to it.

Any googling on the net has only let me to a company
called Tele-Optics which seems to be some sort of
tele/networking company.

Does anyone know what this is and what it does?

Thanks
Jo

I believe it is a prime focus Nikon mount telescope adapter. Lots of
different brands were/are made. Check out the Astronomy areas for more
information.

It turns any Nikon telephoto lens into a monocular.

Nikon made a similar accessory for some years. It
was discontinued a few years ago and is now quite a
sought-after item. Used examples appear on eBay a
few times every month on average, and occasionally
a NOS (new, old stock) example appears and is quickly
snapped up.

I have a Vivitar TLA-1 telescopic lens adapter marked N/A1
that turns my Nikon lenses into monoculars. - It's very
useful for quick inspection of lenses, so I carry it with me
whenever I am liable to be buying a used lens at swap meets
and the like.....

After reading some of the other responses and taking another look at the
photos, I believe they are correct. I did not look close enough to the
mount.

Thanks for the replies.
What search words do you use in eBay to find them?

Good question. I used to look at "Lenses, for Nikon" and "Nikon
Accessories". There are *so many* adverts ... :-(

Nikon calls theirs the "lens scope converter". Overall, it's a competent
piece of optics.

It's a basic Abbe image erecting prism, with a 10mm (if memory serves)
eyepiece permanently installed. The combination of prism and eyepiece
gives you a rather small exit pupil.

It's very nice on a 300mm f2.8 with a good 1.4x tc.

Ciao!

The usefulness here is a bit limited because the scope converter sees
only a small portion of the field of view, and everything faster than
about f/3 is blocked by an internal aperture in the roof prism. The
off-axis aberrations are also quite bad, as they are for most
eyepieces. However, it is excellent for detecting focal shifts when
zooming a zoom lens.
