I have recently pulled an OM-4 from storage. Bought film and a new
battery for it. Loaded the film last night and advanced it several
shots to load and put it away until today to take some photos. Now
the shutter is not responding and the film advance lever will not
advance the film. The battery checks OK and the camera is metering as
expected. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
Thanks,
James Newman
Also, is the mirror down or up?

Thank you for your quick reply. In answer to your questions the
battery I used is a Duracell Lithium 1/3N. This is a single 3V
battery. This was the battery that was in the camera when I took it
from storage. From reading the newsgroups I now know that Lithiums
are not the way to go. I should tell you that I also removed an OM-2
from storage and purchased new batteries for it. What I found inside
that camera were (2) 76X 1.5V silver oxide batteries. Instead of the
single Duracell 1/3N should I be using a pair or 76X batteries? Is
this what Olympus originally recommended for the OM-4?
Also the mirror is down.
Thanks again for your help.

Replace this with two silver oxide batteries and try again. Without
batteries, the OM-4 will still fire the shutter at 1/60th sec. You might
want to put it through a few cycles just to make sure that it doesn't have
other problems.

Get some Eveready 357 watch batteries.

Yes, a pair of 76X, or better yet SR-44 or SR-44W (Eveready 357s are the best)
is what you should be putting in your OM-2 and OM-4.

The mirror being down would worry me a little. Normally an OM will react to low
batteries by locking the mirror up. You may want to make sure that the OM-4 is
set to one of the non-mechanical speeds. If it is set to the red B or the red
60 then the meter won't work. To get it out of the mechanical speeds you need
to press the tiny "B Lock" button at the bottom right of the lens mount (as
viewed from the front of the camera).
Good luck!

LR44 don't work very well in OMs. Being alkalines, their voltage starts
dropping almost immediately after initial use. Silver oxide batteries, like the
SR44, keep a fairly constant voltage right up until they die. The best battery
for OMs is the Eveready 357 (also labeled SR44W).
